Hi all,
Re:phono stage on XMC-1...
We have decided to make the phono stage external for a number of reasons.
1. In order to do a "proper" MC/MM phono stage we would have to increase the cost of the processor by nearly $100.00. Considering the percentage of users who need phono capability, it didn't seem like it was a good decision.
2. Noise. The XMC-1 is full of high speed DSP's and micro-processors. Phono levels are extremely low and sensitive to interference. The easiest way to gaurantee noise free operation was to go external.
3. We didn't want to add a "throw away" phono stage just to check off another feature.
3. The new and incredibly good sounding XPS-1 MC/MM phono stage will be out shortly and this will take care of your phono needs with real precision and fidelity at a very reasonable price point. We'll more than likely offer a bundle discount if it is ordered with the processor.
4. Phono pre-amps are like speakers and cables, every one wants something different. By keeping it as a separate unit, you can play!!
Cheers, Big Dan Photo by klinemj Does anyone have any news or updates on the XPS-1 High Precision Low Noise Phono Pre-Amp?

A new podcast should be imminent - perhaps we'll have more info then. Other than that, there hasn't been any new info.

From the Emofest info - this is one of many products to be available late this year/early next. Per chaosrv...there may be news on the next podcast.
From what I understand, it's basically the same unit that's inside the XSP-1. Given that unit is done and working great (LOVE mine!!!) - I would expect the timing to be soon for the stand-alone unit.

Dan mentions that it would have added 100 to the cost. I wonder if we can assume that this standalone unit would be priced around that mark. It looks intriguing as some of the preamps in my shortlist have no phono section.

It looks intriguing as some of the preamps in my shortlist have no phono section. You need to keep in mind that adding the phono circuit to a pre/pro would not require another power supply, AC power circuit, AC cable, a new circuit to boost the signal input from the cartridges, or an enclosure with another remote control. I would not be surprised to see it being offered at $150 to $180, maybe even higher if it has the same performance level as the phono circuit in the XSP-1.

Oh that's right, those items would add to the cost somewhat.

I wonder whether there is any way to defeat the RIAA correction. I'd be very tempted to do something like this: www.channld.com/purevinyl/Except that their amps are insanely expensive.

I figure the name of the external phono stage (XPS-1) is going to cause confusion with the XSP-1 over and over... In any case, the XPS-1 promises to be a great phono stage, just like the one in the XSP-1!

They need to change the name to XPhono-1 or XTP-1 immediately.

Yep, I like XPP-1 too.
X-Series Phono Pre-amp.
A distinct and memorable designation.
I wonder if I should hold out for the RPP-1?

I wonder if I should hold out for the RPP-1? That would need balanced outs.

Well, now that the Christmas rush is over, and the Holiday sale about to be over. I'm looking forward to the new spring products. I know that Emotiva's new policy is to not mention updates on new products until they're about ready. I'm just hoping that the XPS-1 (phono pre-amp) is in the spring group.

Well I hope this gets out soon! It would be a great addition to my headphone rig as I need a phono pre-amp. It could even be in a housing like the XDA-2.

I do hope this comes out soon. My VPI Scoutmaster is coming tomorrow and right now I'll have to use my Denon AVR 4306 as the preamp. I am so very tempted to pick up the XSP-1 but I would only use it for the phono stage which would be a waste. I don't need a full-on stereo pre-amp, just a phono stage.
Since I am just getting into the vinyl game, I want something I can play with and adjust as I try different set ups & carts. The XPS-1 looks ideal (adjustable resistance) without going overboard in pricing and unneeded features found in true stereo preamps.
C'Mon Big Dan & Co and get this to market! But don't rush it, of course. After the phono stage, comes the XMC-1 then i can breathe again.

Geez.
I can't get a break. Do you understand what it takes to design, build, and launch a product? Especially if you care about how it sounds?? And you want to do it at a price that makes it a killer value?
Add up all of the products that we have out there under our three brands. 125 and counting... And we have another 30 or so in the works!
The XPS-1 is coming out soon.
The UMC-500 is coming out too.
And more stuff you don't even know about yet!! Hang in there... we're doing the best we can!
OK, I'll stop whining.
Your humble servant, Big Dan The XPS-1 is a very nice sounding little outboard phono preamp.
It is rather similar to the phono section in the XSP-1, and is intended to add a high-quality phono preamp to pre/pros (including ours).
It will be available shortly. YEA, WOO HOO, YEAH !!!

Yeah these names are very confusing. Is there a hierarchy of sorts on the quality of the phono sections of these different units? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from good to great I thought it might go like this: USP-1 -- XMC-1 -- XSP-1. Where does the upcoming XPS-1 fit in?
