Hardcore? No; just a fan from my youth when I watched an episode every evening after school.
One of my classmates, however, is not only Captain of the Harryhausen, but also named her eldest son "Jon Luc." It created drama when he enlisted & served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (up until its retirement).
Captain Vadok was a Starfleet officer who commanded the USS Harryhausen during the Dominion War while it was part of the 856th Tactical Wing, Starfleet Eighth Fleet.
PS: I had to Google it to find out...

If indeed it is Khan, I hope the actor playing Khan lives up to Ricardo Montalban's portrayal. I must say the last movie was quite a refreshing take on Star Trek, lets hope it keeps going in that direction.

It can't (shouldn't) be Khan. Kirk hasn't been a captain long enough to maroon Khan in the first place, much less have the years of hate and hardship build up to explain the motive of his actions. Besides, the whole point of changing the time line is not to have to worry about canon and to do new stories. What was the point of the first movie if they're just going to end up remaking movies that were made 30 years ago?

I would like to see a young Khan and get some backfill to the original story. It doesn't need to be a simple rehash but a fresh reboot like the first one is ok by me.

Why not a running series with Khan like there was a running series with Darth Vader in Star Wars? Would be interesting.

The key thing is that it appears that the villain has super stregnth. So wouldn't that rule Kahn out?

I would like to see a young Khan and get some backfill to the original story. It doesn't need to be a simple rehash but a fresh reboot like the first one is ok by me. There were a number of things that made The Wrath of Khan so good. One is that it was less dry, less high sci-fi, and more Star Wars-y than the first one (which was more like the original series). The second was, like Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back (which were steeped in Eastern philosophy), that it had a morality play woven in between all the shootouts. Joachim says to Khan "We're all with you, sir. But, consider this. We are free. We have a ship, and the means to go where we will. We have escaped permanent exile on Ceti Alpha V. You have defeated the plans of Admiral Kirk. You do not need to defeat him again." and Khan responds, "He tasks me. He tasks me and I shall have him! I'll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before I give him up!" Without sufficient back story (marooned, death of his wife, previous entanglements with Kirk in Space Seed) and roughly 15 to 20 years of hate broiling inside him from the time the two met (in Star Trek time) this doesn't have as much meaning. The whole Tale of Two Cities references wouldn't make sense either unless Kirk (who in the reboot has just met Spock) has significant back story to it. My point is that Kirk and Spock were known to the audience through TOS, significant amount of books and other media (animated series considered canon) and a previous movie. The audience knew who they were and understood their actions and motivations. Because the reboot started (and changed the timeline) before the events in TOS we no longer have this affiliation with the characters. The story of Khan would have to change significantly and the movie itself would have to have a lot of back story to fill in the gaps to make it anywhere near as good as the original. Of course, Abrams could monkey everything up worse than he did the first one (an enjoyable film but not as good as others) and just make a "summer blockbuster" with lots of explosions and action, sure to make it's money at the box office. But I hold Star Trek to a bit higher expectations than that.

Never mind, then ;D

If I remember correctly, Khan was a genetically engineered tyrant who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s (shades of Hitler & the Aryan race). Genetic engineering had made Kahn smarter and stronger than typical humans. Eugenics, and improvement of humans via genetic engineering are concepts sure to reoccur again, and not just in the movies. As the ability of medical science improves, genetic engineering will undoubtedly be used to reduce the likelihoods of genetically-transmitted diseases including diabetes, Down's syndrome, etc. The engineering is unlikely to stop there. Once the ability to avoid defects has been perfected, the temptation to add "improvements" will be irresistible. The bottom line is: There's a Kahn in your future!
