From the article: "The problem has only been getting worse over the years, some Blu-rays won't let you skip the opening bits at all, and some won't allow you to skip quickly from one trailer to the next and jump to the menu". I experiance this on RENTAL discs primarily, and hate it.
On the other hand, I actually like the trailers/previews because it makes me feel more like I'm at the movies. That's as long as I can skip over them if I want to that is....

I agree they are very annoying, especially when you own the movie and you've seen all the movies the trailers are for. I enjoy the new ones I rent, as they give me ideas of what to rent in the future. But usually what I do is fire up the theater room, put in the disc, then go hit the bathroom, drinks, snacks etc and by the time I get back its waiting for me at the menu!

Yet another good reason to get AnyDVD - you can rip your own copies that eliminate the FBI/Interpol warning as well as the annoying trailers. Best $39 I ever spent...
I copied this from Home Theater Shack:
"After loading the disc, as soon as the DVD logo on the player's display appears (or when the TV says DVD-Video), I immediately hit the menu button. That usually skips over the junk and goes straight to the main menu. Second best is hitting Stop, then Menu. My observations may only apply to the Oppo HD-981DV."
I *think* this works with the BDP series from Oppo as well. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Unfortunately, you have it exactly backwards. The software to make illegal copies is cheap, easy to use, and easy to get. By forcing legitimate customers to sit through endless trailers and other crap, all the vendors do is give those paying customers incentive to buy the pirating software to avoid the trailers.... (Of course, once they've bought the software, then they're much more likely to use it to pirate stuff.) I know one or two people (not naming names) who occasionally buy a disc for their collection, and then download a pirated copy of the video to watch - JUST so they can watch it without the trailers and commercials. The trailers and warnings do nothing whatsoever to deter piracy - all they do is to annoy paying customers. (Face it, the sort of people who are going to make or use bootleg copies are NOT going to not do so because of some idiot warning. In fact, some people actually take the presence of those trailers and warnings as ample evidence that the people who put them there have no respect for their paying customers - and so deserve no respect or consideration in return.) And, in case you were wondering, yes, any decent pirating software lets you pirate videos WITHOUT the trailers..... I'm not sure that has anything to do with it. You can still pirate them along with the trailers... Yes, and having to sit through all those stupid trailers is punishment to the people who get these illegal copies.

You make an interesting point, although, personally, one of the reasons I usually DON'T go to the theater anymore is that I resent being forced to sit through commercials after paying good money to see the %$#@ movie. (I wouldn't mind if they would restrict the commercials to the time BEFORE the scheduled show time, so the people who want to see them can do so - but the rest of us don't have to.) From the article: "The problem has only been getting worse over the years, some Blu-rays won't let you skip the opening bits at all, and some won't allow you to skip quickly from one trailer to the next and jump to the menu".I experiance this on RENTAL discs primarily, and hate it. The purpose of the FBI and Copyright notices is not to stop anyone who really wants to pirate the content from doing anything but to explicitly state that the content owners intend to prosecute copyright violators. They are not legally required to make these statements (not since 1978 at least) but it is seen both as a good practice and as a method of deterrent against a "casual" copier. As far as trailers and other ads in videos (or on the cinema screen) it is all about marketing. If they didn't work (if they didn't drive consumer traffic toward those products) then they would not be there. But they do work, so they are used.

KeithL typed: "(I wouldn't mind if they would restrict the commercials to the time BEFORE the scheduled show time, so the people who want to see them can do so - but the rest of us don't have to.)".
Yes - exactly! The last movie I went to see ("Zero Dark Thirty") last Saturday night had a scheduled start time of 7:05pm, but the actual movie started at 7:38pm (yeah I kept track...). And then (which REALLY baffles me), is all the people still coming in all the way up to nearly 8pm(!). Some were bold enough to loudly ask people to consolidate seats in the middle of rows so they can sit where they want to - even after arriving 40 minutes late. (Who raises these people anyway???).
But having said all that - I will say again that I like watching the trailers at home when I fire up a Blu-ray - for the first time. After that, its 'skip', skip', skip', MENU!

A guy actually tried to sue over the start time a few years ago arguing as you did, that the advertised time should be when the actual movie you paid for starts. I don't remember if it was thrown out or he lost. OTOH, advertising the later time could cause more people to show up and try to find seats as the movie is starting - but 20 minutes late like that is baffling.

Don't you just love the little parts parts during these trailers about how to use your cell phone to get all the latest movie info tripe and find more information and then tell everyone to shut their devices off when the movie is about to begin? Back on topic.... I have so little time to actually watch a disc that I need to schedule it within +/- 10 minutes to coincide with conference calls with off-shore teams. When I try to fast forward, skip, or get to the menu and I get, "Disabled" or, "Not Available", I want to scream. I will always miss the last 10-15 minutes of a movie when this happens. Ruins the entire thing. If I was watching the movie for free I would have no gripe. But dang it! I PAID for this movie not for being a marketing target. Some people know and others don't that this is related to why I NEVER answer the phone if the I don't know who it is. And I'm on the Wisconsin no call list to boot! That is so true - we are subjected to endless stuff at the beginning of a blu ray that we have no choice in avoiding. I guess someone could make the argument that this junk subsidizes the cost of the blu ray and without it the price would be higher (such as how commercials make television "free" to watch) but then it just encourages people to pirate the discs, which then causes the industry to react, which then increases piracy, in a never-ending spiral.
If you want to put that stuff on the disc, fine, but give us a choice about watching it rather than force it on us. All it does is make people angry. It's like those morons who put on a protest and block intersections tying up traffic and think that the drivers who can't go anywhere are going to sympathize with their cause. All it does is make enemies.
