One thing that I found with people finding popping noises with interrupted bitstreams (Ie. Changing channels with DVRs/Tivo, BR Players) on OTHER receivers is that sometimes a receiver/processor will search for the lost signal through other audio inputs such as the corresponding analog inputs and this will cause the pops. People have fixed this issue on the receivers by changing the audio selection from auto to digital only. This will stop the receiver from hunting for the lost signal and no more popping noises. At least, it fixed the issues on the Tivo forums for people who could do this on their set ups.
I do not know if the UMC-200 has this option or not. (Still waiting for mine, been doing research)

Interesting. I like (and use) the sub cable from BJC, and very happy with the quality. But I've had good experiences with Monoprice for various cables over the years as well. I also thought I would splurge and get a nice custom set of I/Cs between my '200' and XPA-5. They are 5 4 foot XLR to RCA from www.proaudiola.com. Just under $90 total including shipping. Quality parts and workmanship! 5 day shipping.

Unfortunately, the digital bitstream is being dropped by the SOURCE (in this case the DVR). When one piece of video stops, and another one starts, the bitstream stops and then restarts THIS HAPPENS AT THE SOURCE DEVICE (the DVR) - and would actually be quite complex to prevent this entirely, so they don't try. When we sense that the bitstream has been interrupted, we engage our muting, which prevents the audio junk that THEY are sending at the jagged ends of the old and new bitstreams from being played; we try to hold the muting just long enough to block out the noise, without cutting off any of the program, but sometimes we don't get it just right. (Apparently some other folks do a bit better job of guessing correctly or, more likely, they just mute a bit longer - and risk cutting off the beginning of the new stream; we're only talking about a few milliseconds either way there.) We have no control over the necessity of reacquiring the bitstream because it is the source component that is dropping it - not us. The OSD is simply informing you of what's happening - and, yes, if you aren't interested in hearing about it then, by all means, disable the OSD. My UMC-200 sometimes makes a loud popping noise when I change channels or FF or REW my DirecTV DVR. Sometimes the noise is a loud"skipping" sound that doesn't stop until I change the channel or FF or REW. The problem occurs when the audio signal is reacquired after having been lost. Which leads to another pet peeve of mine, I hate that the audio is dropped and reacquired when I FF or REW my DVR. It causes the Emotiva OSD to display the type of incoming signal on the TV every time you FF or REW. I had to disable the OSD. That is obviously very minor compared to the LOUD pop that sometimes happens.

When we (almost any piece of Emo gear) mute, we do so by shorting our output to ground. If there's any DC on the input of the sub or amp that we're connected to, shorting it to ground can indeed cause a thump. Sometimes, as in your case, using a different cable or input can fix it - other times it requires a repair (of the sub or amp to which we are connected). My Empires used to THUMP, i just got different cables and it ELIMINATED it, i first got 2 Monoprice XLR cables, still had the problem, then i got another Monoprice XLR cable, to go from the UMC-200 to my AntiMode 8033, BOOM, it fixed it, I was HAPPY, if i were you i would try a different SUB CABLE.

Ok thanks for the info Kieth, what about the AMPS?, i had the upa-200 , and now the xpa-3 hooked up to the rears, and there is a ticking sound coming from both of them, and my center is hooked up to it as well, but i dont hrear it from that, maybe because its farther away.

The OSD is simply informing you of what's happening - and, yes, if you aren't interested in hearing about it then, by all means, disable the OSD. This is unfortunate because people are relying on their processors and receivers to do the muting properly so the thumps are not there. Now I am a bit scared that the UMC-200 and UPA-500 that I have on order may not be up to the standards of my past receivers. I cannot live with any pops, thumps, helicopter noises regardless what fingers will be pointed.

And those who dismiss a whole group of diverse individuals just because they happen to post on the same forum are also not to be taken seriously, nor even considered entertaining.

pointing fingers in regards to Emotiva not taking responsabilty for flaws in there products, instead of making excuses, all I hear is them blaming everything in the chain of your audio equipment causing the problem........from your wiring to other components!

I believe your logic is flawed here Jukebox. If there was an inherent issue in the product then wouldn't it stand to reason that everyone who has the processor would experience the same issue? Before you bash us you should carefully consider your position and the accusations you are making to be sure they hold up under scrutiny.
