They are also used a good bit for mixing in the US and at Lucas Film. I think that is a good promo.

Speakers are like Sushi. Some might like a brand, some may not. So much is based on source material, room, other associated electronics and YOUR idea of what sounds good.. It's almost like asking what flavor ice cream is the best - no right answer... :-) I'm sure some would beg to differ on that and tell you there is indeed the best ice cream flavor AND sushi flavor. In fact, sushi-flavored ice cream is the best. Maybe in Japan. We like roast beef flavored ice cream the best here in the States..

FYI, the 802 I have listened to was an 802d...not the diamond, just the "d". I have listened several times, and when they sound good - they sound great. When they don't - I think they are really dead in the midrange...make some music downright unlistenable. A friend who also heard the same thing showed me a German Audio guide and it shows they are very hard to drive in the midrange, dropping very low in impedance. So, it may be the guy who owns the system we listened to needs a different amp - he is driving the 802d's via a 5-channel Rotel. Mark, The previous 802D was also with diamond tweeter. The smaller models were named "S", no diamond tweeter. The only ones with diamond tweeters were the fat 800D/801D/802D and the slim 803D tower. I heard them (800D & 802D) a few times and was always very impressed... A modest Rotel seems a bit on the cheap for such expensive speakers IMO. They don't really need XPR-1, but XPR-5/XPR-2 or XPA-1 would be perfect without overspending, no?

every Nautilus series and later I've played with could never have enough power. We ran the original Nautilus 801's on a big nasty McIntosh MC452 2 channel. Wonderful bass out of them.

I just noticed your address. I sure miss Myers audio. I went to their Sterling Va. location a lot and was sad to see them fold. They carried the B&W line and I bought gear from them.

Myer-Emco? Yeah...I worked at the Fairfax location from 1996-2000. My old boss(es) left a year before the demise and started IQ Home Entertainment. They took over the old Audio Buys/Tweeter building in Fairfax. They now carry McIntosh and B&W as well. Good guys and have picked up the mantle from Emco....

Wow...blast from the past. I had a Proton television serviced at Myer-Emco back in 2001 when I lived in Sterling, VA.

I agree...my buddy who owns the 802d's feels like he needs more amp and has auditioned a few but he didn't feel they helped (I was not able to be there at the demo as I live here in the USA and he is in Germany, so we only get together 2-3 times/year). My other buddy from Germany who shares my opinion runs Sonus Faber Cremona's with a Unison S6 tub amp...his Cremona's were what got be looking to replace my old Paradigms (and led to my Maggies).
In any case - I would make sure if I were listening to the B&W's that I paid attention to the mids and having enough amp to drive them. My Cremons buddy and I strongly suspect that's why we each feel our other buddy's system is a bit weak.
And - are you sure about the 802d always having the diamond? The owner was the one who told me and I thought he even showed me a brochure about them that confirmed his didn't have the diamond...

I checked the product archive on their website. If it has the bowling ball midrange spheres, it also has the diamond tweeter. The pre-diamond ones look different, like the 802 S3.

I've own the 802N, and along with the 805N's love them, I also was able to listen to a pair of 800D, and 802D over the rear listening to Fleet wood Mac DVD-A, all Denon Separates SSP, and amp, and WOW, at a pals home. It was really something special, if I ever get big money I'm def will own a set of those, or what ever incarnation will be available when.

I just compared pix of the 802s3 and 802d/di - my buddy clearly does not have the 802s3's...it must be the 802d's because he did say he didn't have the latest version and wished he did.

Thanks guys. I think I'll ask if I can take them home for a week or two, give them a deposit or something.. Reading some reviews and not a bad word anywhere, most love them.. Never heard a pair of Maggie's yet don't know anyplace that sells them by me..lol And, I have a surprise for you. I happen to have a nice set of floor spikes for hardwood that I used on my 804's. Here is a pic of them with my wife hugging me from behind. If you look at the bottom you will see them. They are well made with felt pad on acoustic isolation feet and swivel to self-level. They are threaded for the B&W and I will gift them to you if you buy your new B&W's. They are too small a thread for my 802's which is why I did not include them in the sale as I hoped to reuse them. They will just sit in the cabinet forever so if you show a Proof of Purchase on your new ones I will send to you if you indeed need the hardwood floor solution. Here are my 802's that I scrunched and saved for till I could get it approved by my accountant wifey. ;D These weigh a whooping 176 pounds each. I must confess that the Glass Violin in the bookcase by Dino Rosin cost more than my speakers.

Check out this link, this guy made B&W 802 Reference speakers from scratch using Genuine parts from B&W.. It's sad to actually know how much of our speaker purchase is actual parts cost then labour added in.. The parts cost total for a pair of 802 Reference speakers is $9000 the rest is labour, now not sure if that per speaker or a pair.. But boy can this guy build, he's Fantastic, work of art. forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=198192

His labor is easily worth more than the cost of those parts, not to mention the cost of the equipment that allows him to make something like that. Great work.
