Hi, everyone. I am on the market for an XPR-2 and I have a question. Currently I am using an XPA-5 Gen 2 to power two pairs of speakers running in parallel - the Polk LSiM 705s and Magnepan 2.7Q/Rs. The 705s are 8ohm and the XPA-5 does a fine job handling them. But the Maggies are 4ohm. So, I want to get an XPR-2 to handle the Maggies alone while the XPA-5 powers the Polks. Here is the question. Will there be timbre mismatch between one pair and the other being powered by different Emotiva power amp (XPR/XPA)? I don't think the amp will alter the timber match at all, but I do highly recommend XPR-1 MONOBLOCKS !!! Their real beasts and twice as beautiful as the XPR-2!!!! Just my two cents.

Why worry about amp timbre mismatching when you are already dealing with speaker timbre mismatching. No amp will fix that. Mathematically, differences in speakers are about 1000 times that of differences in amps.

Thanks bootman, after a reread, I see it now. I missed it the first time. You are correct.

That is a good point (the speaker mismatch). I think both speaker pairs complement each other very well - the openness and humongous image of the Maggies and bite and clear midrange of the Polks. What disadvantage the pair has (the Polk's enclosure coloration and the Maggies weak slam factor and anemic lower bass), the other pair hides and even compensates for. So, this is a speaker match made in heaven for me. Would have cost me $30K to buy a single pair of speakers that would be able to do this. Thanks for quick and very helpful responses, gentlemen.

Well I've given in to the desire of having a mate for my XPR-5, so I just ordered an XPR-2 at the exceptional sale price. Once I have it up and running I'll comment on the heat it dissipates, but given how cool my XPR-5 runs, I'm expecting the same. I'll now have the Reference level power amplifiers in place for the future Reference level speakers. Damn Emotiva for turning me into an audio junkie! ;D My XPR2 does not run as cool as my XPR5. Its not even close. Not sure if I have a defective one but the XPR2 is warm to touch and puts off a decent amount of heat during use where as the XPR5 is very cool when being ran. I dont have a clue about y this is but would like someone who has both to chime in before I call support. If it is meant to run like that, that is fine by me. But if it is supposed to run cool like all of the other XPR series then I may have a bad unit. I believe that your experience is consistent with other posts that I've read about the XPR-2. It does seem to run warmer than the XPR-5 and XPR-1. I'm not sure how to quantify "warmer", however. EDIT: Sorry, just realized this was an old post...

Thanks to you guys I pulled the trigger on the XPR-2. Here is what is interesting. Emotiva E-club pays for itself and then some. The XPR-2 list price: $1,799, Holiday special $1,619. But if you buy E-club membership for $49 they take off 25% off, so it becomes only $1,457.10! Even after paying for the membership they save you $110. Not a bad deal. Cant wait for its arrival so I can see how warm/hot it gets.

(Not much better but still a little better). It's a nice deal..it's still not cheap but well worth it imho. The worst part of the purchase is lifting and putting it in place...heavy...heavy..amp..
