I asked what is the difference between a DAC and a DSP in the Stupid Questions section and got some really helpful answers. Now I would like to know what DAC chip the UMC-200 has in it. I already have one (see sig) but want to learn as much as I can about it.

I'm not sure but it likely uses the Cirrus 4200 or 4300 series DACs which are designed to work with the Cirrus 4970 series DSP.

That sounds reasonable but there are a lot of chips in the 4300 series with very different numbers. I found that the Oppo 93 uses the Cirrus Logic CS4382A (24-bit). It would be nice to know exactly which chip we have

I found that the UMC-1 uses one of these: CS42518/28 24 110 / 114 DACs; 114 ADCs -100 DACs; -100 ADCs 192 Differential DACs Differential ADCs VA = 5; VD = 3.3 or 5; VL = 1.8 to 5 Multi-Channel Multi-Channel CODEC, 8 DACs, 2 ADCs, S/PDIF Rx, Digital volume control 64 LQFP Maybe the UMC-200 uses the same? Honestly because I don't know what I'm talking about and I don't want to waste his time on something like this that really doesn't matter one way or the other. It is just a curiosity with me. I would much rather he use his time with putting out new products than answer my nonsense. But I would still like to know so if he, or anyone else, would like to put it on here that would be great.

It uses the CS42518 driven by the CS495314 which is driven by the CS497024. The output of the CS42518 goes to 5532 I/V which then goes to the NJW1298 analog volume control for the main zone. The secondary zones and level shifters use other analog volume controls. I hope this helps. Lonnie

Actually the flow is very logical.
You have the main decoder (7024) which then goes to the post processor (5314) and from that to the DAC (518), from the DAC you need I/V converters (5532) which then feed the volume control (1298) and that goes out to your amp.
I kind of over simplified things here but you get the basic idea. ;D

So to compare numbers, the Oppo-93:
24-bit Conversion Up to 192 kHz Sample Rates 114 dB Dynamic Range -100 dB THD+N
The UMC-200:
Eight 24-bit D/A, two 24-bit A/D Converters 110 dB DAC / 114 dB ADC Dynamic Range -100 dB THD+N System Sampling Rates up to 192 kHz
To my very uneducated eye the numbers look very close. I've never heard the oppo (I know the 95/105 has the superior DACs) but it has some very good reviews.

Yep they look pretty close to me as well. I thought about using a 32 bit DAC, but the real reason we haven't gone down that road is there just isn't any media to support it. So on a left justified DAC, it would just be filling in a bunch of zeros. Now having said that, I know a lot of people who swear they sound better and to them I am sure they do. In my humble opinion, I just can hear or measure it, so we will stick with it for the time being. Lonnie
