The Absolute Sound is absolutely full of crap. If you want a Mac-compatible format, use ALAC, it is the Apple version of FLAC. DbPowerAmp will transcode from AIFF to ALAC in bacth mode...

I bought the Mac version for my daughter. It is not quite released yet, but at half off, I pulled the plug! She has a dragonfly and the Jriver will let her play her files at full res instead of being downsampled. Trey I ordered it too. I'm expecting it to start to be stable in June or July. There are other ways to get iTunes to play full res files too.

...iTunes works great for me... Mr. Yohn - I apologize. You are right and I am wrong. The vast majority of iTunes users have little or no trouble with their installations. I am the (unfortunately for me) exception. Since the only constant in my history of iTunes problems has been my media, and since that media has been ripped to ALE and converted to AIFF (both by iTunes and non-iTunes software), it seems that only a mass conversion/unification of my media will solve my problems. I think that this may be true using either the iTunes database or any other player's database. Because I know that you have both a large iTunes library and a trouble-free one, might you be willing to share the type(s) of file formats that are used on your media? Thanks - Boomzilla I wasn't trying to be "right," only to point out that your issue is relatively unique. If your "media has been ripped to ALE and converted to AIFF (both by iTunes and non-iTunes software)" then it is no wonder iTunes is having trouble with it. Like I said, if you want to use iTunes then you really must use iTunes to rip, buy and manage your files,. If you are importing them you are much more likely to have issues. If you alter them from what iTunes creates you are much more likely to have issues. If you move them from one drive to another you are much more likely to have issues. So either use iTunes for everything, or don't use it at all is my advice. Build or buy a Vortexbox. It will serve any and all file formats equally well (including all the iTunes formats.) It rips CDs and DVDs automatically (using FLAC or MKV format) and it includes a Logitech Media server to use a Squeeze-based playback device, it supports any DLNA or UPnP playback device, and if you like it includes it's own internal software player for direct playback from the Vortexbox appliance using a USB DAC. Check it out, it'll solve your problems.

Hey Boomzilla don't know if this will work, but iTunes is constantly updated. Have you tried time machine to go back in time as part of the diagnosis? Just curious. I am not a fan of iTunes either as the interface is not so hot for me, but it does work. I am impressed with JRiver and Foobar though.

...Have you tried time machine to go back in time as part of the diagnosis?... No. I have, however, downloaded JRiver for Mac (alpha version). I haven't imported my library yet, but plan to soon.

Well -
I installed the Alpha version of JRiver media player for Mac. It imported my entire iTunes library in .aiff format without a hitch and in about ten minutes. 30 songs did not convert (the corrupted files, I'm presuming).
So far, no data loss, no title/cover-art scrambling. It works just the way it's supposed to!
If this happy state continues, I'll be a happy JRiver user and will be able to tell iTunes a heartfelt "AMF!"
For that vast majority of youse guys for whom iTunes never burps, I'm happy for you.
For the very few (like me) for whom iTunes is the nightmare that keeps on giving, maybe JRiver is the solace you seek.

Boom,
Did it give you a list of the 30 songs it didn't import? Those could be the trouble you have been having all along.
Glad you seem to have a working option in JRiver. Keep us posted.

Most of the features aren't yet enabled. I do think that those "dirty thirty" may have, indeed, been the cause of iTunes' grief. We'll just have to wait & see... Boomzilla
