doc1963..May God Bless You Sir!!I have been looking for this upgraded crossover for sometime now..Many thanks Sir! for posting this! 8-)it should work as well with the LSi-15's right? LOL... You're welcome... Well, these are modded LSi-9 XOs, but, yes, the modification procedures are the same. Just different cap values to tie in the woofer and lower mid-bass driver. The Sonicap caps required for the low end on the LSi-15s are quite large and will likely need to be "daughtered" off to either a separate board or secured to the inside of the cabinet. Hope this helps

I saw a couple websites that offered upgraded crossovers but they were like $700 which is almost what I spent on the speakers in the first place... if I could find someone or get someone to upgrade them for a couple hundred id do that. Send an email to Trey at VR3 mods: www.vr3mods.com/He has several "stages" of crossover mods for the LSi15's. Edit: Sorry I posted this b4 i got to the end of the thread. I didn't realize it'd been posted. Do a google search of LSi crossover mods. Lot's out there... ...

Thanks for that link villock. at least if I cant get it fixed under warranty then I can get it fixed cheap, or it might be good to do that anyways. That's what I would do were I you. If you search internet, LSi x-overs blow up quite regularly! I'm gonna do it to my LSi-15's as soon as I can afford it. Hopefully b4 it blows.

So far so good, if it was the amp that killed his speaker then I guess no one is safe, but im hopeing it was a huge fluke if it did.. I just picked up Studio 100's V5 used from a friend that never really used them at all.. I got them for $2000 in Piano Finish..not a mark on them.. I just ordered my CC-690 I should get it by the end of the week. Up here they cost $4000 retail and the 690 is $2000 I got mine for $1600 all in. Yes I think they are worth it they sound Great, my other buddy has the 60's he came over to listen and just started smiling.. the used refurb stuff .. wow to bad blingsay.. you got my kind of luck.. bad... any body out there know if paradigm studio 100 or 60 like to blow with emo amps too? any body think paradigm studio would be a good speaker to buy.. ? thanks

I run my Lsi15's with a USP-1, XDA-1 AND XPA-2, without an issue. I wonder if you had a bad apple.

So these are my UPA-1's he has. I literally was using them listening to music and playing call of duty that morning. I unplugged them from my gr-60's, moved my bi-amp wires over to the xpa-5, and put em in the car. I used the amps to drive the gr-60's, all 5 of my acoustic energy speakers at one point or another, a pair of B&W 602d2's, and a pair of B&W matrix 3's. Never once had an issue. My take on this is that the LSi crossover went kaboom with the current the UPA's can give. This likely shorted the tweeter or sent a strong pulse to it and blew it. I think the low impedance of the LSi minus the tweeter probably faced the amp with a now sub 1 ohm impedance which is what smoked the amp.
I am very good at soldering and have professional equipment at home. If you want to mod your crossovers I'd be happy to do it for ya. ;-)
P.S. I have a whole AE system! Could just return the polks,... Lol

yeah I took the good working tweeter and moved it to the speaker in question and it didn't work there so that told me the crossover is bad on that one to took the suspected dead tweeter and put it on the working speaker and it still didn't work, so that tweeter is def. bad moved good tweeter back to good speaker and it works fine. tweeter is an easy swap, but the crossover is a bit of a pain. Geez blindsay, what a stoke of bad luck. I can tell you, from experience, that the resistor on the XO board that protects the tweeter has blown and "may" be the only damage to the crossover. Unfortunately, whatever occurred got your tweeter too. Odd that it took both... If Polk can't help you out under warranty (they may just ship you out a new XO and tweeter, no questions asked), the resistor isn't hard to replace if you are handy with a soldering iron and a pair of snips. I can help you through the process. Definitely give Polk CS a shot first as, I too, have always had very good luck with them. At one time, "Club Polk" members received a discount on replacement parts as well as free expedited shipping. So, if you're not already a member, you might wanna join. Contrary to a comment that was made earlier, Polk didn't use "sub-par" components in the XO (and it is well thought out), but I will say that they didn't use components that would bring out the best that the LSi "can" offer. The components used are "average", but I guess sacrifices were made somewhere to meet a certain price point. To me, I'd rather have higher quality components in the XO than a nice "piano gloss" enclosure, but that's getting off track. The resistor Polk chose is, IMO, under spec'd for the Vifa tweeter that's used. It not only burns out unnecessarily quickly, but also somewhat restrains the performance of the Vifa. As I showed you in your initial thread, I had to rebuild the XOs in my former LSi-9s. Here's a link to a vastly superior Mills resistor that I chose to use. www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=005-3If you choose to upgrade to a better resistor, you'll need to do both XOs.... Here's also a link to the Vifa XT25 tweeter Polk used. They will tell you that their version is "modified", but unless the mounting plate counts (which can be removed and transferred), I have my doubts. www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=264-1016Hope this helps..... Is this ring tweeter same as the one on LSi? I'm thinking in case I fried my tweeter since they are out of warranty I can get these as replacement.

Anyone know if Emotiva is closed or open tomorrow? Most likely open as Emotiva is private industry and tomorrow is a Federal holiday.

I don't know as much about equipment as some here on the forum. You learn something new everyday. I've never heard of a speaker blowing up a power amp before. I've heard of the amps protection circuit shutting the amp down. I've heard of the amps fuse blowing to protect the amp from damage. I would assume the UPA-1 has a fuse in it for that purpose. But I don't know. My hybrid Integreted amp has five fuses in it, and it's just a two channel amp. I suppose some are for the amp section, some for the pre amp section, maybe one for power surge.
It seems to me from what was described, it was playing fine the night before. Turned it on the next morning and heard horrible feedback as soon as the amp kicked on it blew out the tweeter. Amp smells like burning electronics.
I'm neither Holmes nor Watson but it seems like something internal in the the amp let go first to me. As a result of that the speaker received distortion that blew the tweeter. I've had my mid range drivers blown out when I owned Polk RTi 1000's. They were connected to two Carver TFM 35 in bridged mode with 700 watts. Sombody turned it up really loud while the Master and Commander DVD was on during the cannon blast. I smelled the speakers soon as I came in the room. But that was it no further damage to any other equipment. I contacted Polk and they shipped me some new drivers I replaced them. I learned my lesson. I put one of those Carver amps in the box in the closet after that.
I think your assesment is correct the UPA-1 killed your tweeter.

Shipping box arrived today as planned, just dropped it of to be overnighted back to them. Spoke with polk, they asked me to email proof of purchase and my shipping info. did that and now I am waiting to hear back from them.
Hopefully it doesn't take long to repair the amp

blindsay...I am sure you will be back up and running soon. Both Emotiva and Polk Audio are outstanding in service and care.I have those same speakers and the UPA-1 mono-blocks running my front sound stage L/R and the XPA-5 driving my center and my LSiFX's.The mono-blocks will be two years old this June and they stay on from about 4:30 am till way into the nite 11:00pm or so and at times when I put some music on they get "mono-blocks" that is a real hard workout. This is the first time that I know of a UPA-1 failing if that's what happen but who knows even a Mercedes goes down for repairs.Best of luck and please keep us posted.
