Crash- I do not believe you're making an accurate measurement. A pure Class A 100 watt amp will most likely idle somewhere around 600 - 800 watts. Or, perhaps your amp is a SLIDING Class A amp where the bias current is adjusted upwards as more power is required. I believe Hyperion has (had) a solid state (100 watt) amp that worked that way. In any case, there is no way a pure Class A amp idles at 138 watts. Russ I saw this somewhere and would explain his measurements: Technical details: Frequency response: 20 Hz - 50 kHz +/- 0.5 dB Nominal Output Power RMS/8 Ohm: 100W Nominal Output Power RMS/4 Ohm: 200W, Class A/8 Ohm: 10W Total harmonic distortion: < 0.1 % (1 kHz, 1 Watt), Input sensitivity: 1,3V, Signal-Noise ratio: > 97 dB, Input impedance: 48 kOhm, Inputs: 1 x RCA, Outputs: 2 x 2 Speaker,Terminal (A & B), Mains supply: 230 V/50 Hz, 4 Level Tube dimmer switcher, Weight: 15 kg, Colour: black/silver, Dimensions (WxHxD): 210 x 195 x 380 mm. Tubes: 1 x 6Z4, 1 x 6N6, 1 x 6N1 “A vacuum tube-based 'Class A' input stage configuration complements the solid state output stage, which operates in pure 'Class A' for the ultimate in rich detail and imaging for the first ten watts. Above ten watts, the Vincent automatically switches to 'Class AB' to deliver over 200 watts of power for effortless transients and drive capabilities.” www.vincent-tac.de/en/product-lines/tubeline/sp-t100.html

Great article (part 2 too), thanks! Now, i would like to know if somebody found differences in quality between Class A push pull and Class A single ended amps.

Looks like I stand corrected. I rechecked the draw at an idle and it still shows 138 watts/monoblock. According to info posted above Vincent SP-T100 only operate in pure class a for the first ten watts. Sometimes intelligence has its limits, but ignorance knows no bounds.

I thought with class A there was no difference between idling and full output. Is that incorrect? You are correct.

Hi everyone, If I understand correctly every A/B amplifier runs in pure class A for the first.....watts and then switches to A/B mode. Can you tell me how many watts does that represent for the XPA-1L when run in A/B mode only ? How much heat will it have to dissipate in A/B mode ?

so do we go with a XPA-1L or a Carver that is almost in the same ball park?

NovisNick, if I could walk a mile in your shoes....I'd have a new pair of shoes and you'd be barefooted and a mile away - heh, heh!!
Seriously though, I would opt for the XPA-1Ls over the Carvers. First of all, the Carvers are MUCH more expensive - $1260/pr. vs. $6,000/pr. Soooo, unless you have bucks to burn, the Emo amps are definitely the better value. The $4,700 price differential could be better spent on much nicer speakers, room treatments, etc. You will get *much* more benefit from better speakers, etc. than you will from more expensive amps, plain and simple.
The Carvers do have a better warranty, at least for the chassis. It's 7 years vs. 5 for the Emos. However, my experience has shown me that amp failures almost always occur within the first few months of operation. If an amp makes it to 5 years without a failure, the probability is *very* high that it will continue to soldier on for the next couple of decades with no issues whatsoever.
My advice is to get the XPA-1Ls and be one very happy camper!!
