Just came home from watching movie. I didn't spring for 3D, because I don't like the gimmick. A good movie doesn't need it, and it is in my experience a distraction.
The good: A familiar story you can take the kids to see and from the crowd reaction where I saw it, they seemed to enjoy it. This prequel does an adequate job leading anyone who has seen Wizard of OZ, to the beginning of that movie. I liked the look of the the film and most of the effects looked and sounded great. Rachel Weisz really sold me on her role.
The not so great: This movie Emotionally doesn't equal the 1939 sequel. James Franco seems out place, in his role, like he going through the motions. Maybe that's because they spend so much screen time developing his personality, you know the cad and Fraud. This, even when he promises to be a better man in the twister he goes right back to his usual ways. Maybe it's the knowing the wizard of oz story that made things so predictable, so this is a minor nit pick. With today's CGI, I guess, I just expected more. It was just uneven.
Overall, my daughter was entertained and so I give 3/5 I just wished it could have made me care, like the original.
