And again I say:
A comment from Lonnie on the provenance of Emotiva's "Typical in-room response: 20-200 Hz" would be welcome.
Lonnie?

If you look at a lot of consumer subs, they all typically claim 20hz as their lowest dB spec. Although I'm sure they will play at 20hz, even with room gain it's usually not very loud. It's used more as a marketing tool than anything else. You can't cheat psychics.

Emotiva's specifications for this subwoofer are lies. Saying, "Typical In‐Room Frequency Response: 20Hz‐200Hz," is not a lie; it is just meaningless. No amplitude range is given, e.g., "+/-3db." If the sub produces any audible output at 20Hz then the claim is true, but certainly not informative. Most sub builders and reviewers appear to be gravitating toward the 2-meter ground plane in open air method of measurement. To those figures you can add some room gain. Here is a good list of subwoofer measurements, all by the same method: www.data-bass.com/systems

I don't think that Lonnie is active on the board every day so he likely hasn't seen this. If you guys don't get a response in a few days, let me know and I will see what I can find out or get him to chime in.

Well, maybe Lonnie hasn't had the time to respond to the misleading specs on the Emotiva subwoofer or maybe he's just loathe to swim in these shark-infested waters.
Either way the facts speak for themselves. Caveat Emptor.

1) The charts on the X-Ref 12 page are now the right ones.... (thank Hair Nick).... 2) In room response depends on other things besides boundary effect. Boundary effect will make a 9 dB difference between the bass response in the center of a room and in a corner, but there are also room modes (resonances) which vary depending on the actual dimensions of the room and where you place the speaker - and on where you place the measurement microphone - and these act IN ADDITION TO the boundary effect. These effects are why, when you measure a sub in a room, you OFTEN come up with variations as much as +/- 10 dB or even +/- 20 dB from what you expect. And, yes, before you even complain, these variations are why it's very hard to compare in-room response curves - or to tell what they mean.... except that they have been "observed" with that device in a real room. The simple reality is that, in a real room, you can get a 10 dB difference by moving the sub or the microphone a few feet in one direction or the other..... and subs DO usually perform way better in a real room than in an anechoic chamber (which is why everyone talks about in-room response curves)..... of course AFTER you move them around a bit to find the best spot for them. Of course, these curves are UNEQUALIZED anyway, and most people are going to use either something like EmoQ in their pre/pro or the DSP-based EQ in the sub to correct the response anyway......

And does Emotiva consider comb peaks to be "typical" in-room response?
OK - OK - Maybe I'm being too harsh here. Because I really like Emotiva gear, it bothers me that their specs aren't honest. To be fair, I don't see any other manufacturers publishing honest specs either. Does that justify Emotiva fudging their specs? To me, no. Emotiva already offers such good value for the money that honest specs wouldn't hurt their sales, IMHO. I might be wrong. Obviously, Emotiva thinks so or they wouldn't fudge their specs...
In any case, I'm dropping the issue. It is what it is. Just mention to Emotiva that I, for one, vote for honest specifications next time.
Cheers - Boomzilla

The specifications are honest. There is no controversy here.
