Congrats on the upgrades and the clever different size cubbyholes for new equipment If the audax's are rear ported the lower frequencies are normally supposed to hit a solid wall and propagate to reinforce the lower register but even with the slidability surprise [if that's a word ] you don't want those low pass frequencies bouncing around behind So some sound absorption material may easily help. If the center channel isn't flush with the surrounding cabinets you will get diffraction from the drivers as the sound waves hit edges and reflect back effecting possibly 1st reflection point secondary waves /primary waves at a guess. I gather WAF isn't a factor with ungrilled speakers ? Hard to say with the big dual purpose tv speaker grill ? But if the cc is rear ported [ being a 3 way ide maybe lean that way? ] the same things apply and that lovely cabinet work should be on display like the l/r's

Xelah Something you might want to try with the placement of your front and center speakers, to make them sound better, is to move them forward to where the speakers are flush or slightly protruding from the cubbie hole you have them sitting in. I couldn't tell from looking at your photos, but it would probably improve the sound quality if you put some absorbent material behind the front and center channel speakers; and, lastly place some anti-vibration material between the bottom of your speakers and the shelf they are sitting on. Decoupling the speakers from the shelving can go a long way in making them sound more natural. You mean something like this: imageshack.us/a/img377/5201/img4678lc3.jpgI have not made the pull out for the center but have been thinking about doing so. I like the idea of installing some absorbent material behind the speakers. Where would I put it? If you look at the pictures, I have a door on the one side so I can get behind everything. So there is a 2' space between the rear wall and the speaker. Should it go on the wall or just behind the speakers about 6" or so? Thanks for the nice comments all. I didn't realize that your speaker shelves pulled out like shown in your photo. You will want to experiment with how that sounds at different distances. Also, move the speakers to be flush or slightly extended beyond the front edge of the shelf the speaker is sitting on; and please DECOUPLE the speakers from the shelf they sit upon. This could have a huge impact on how your speakers sound. As far as placement of the absorbent material goes I would try both locations to see which sounds better. You don't want an echo chamber squirreling with you music, do you? lol Don't be afraid to experiment and make "small" incremental changes in positioning your speakers. Have fun and report back your progress.

As RoadRunner recommended, pull the speakers out as far as they will extend. Then, toe them in a little. Also, place some sound damping material under them to help de-couple them from the sliders. Finally, find some damping material and place it on the walls of the cubbyholes and behind the speakers in the cubbyholes. These simple upgrades should markedly improve the sound and will cost you very little.
Oh yeah, one last thing, tell the wife to go pound sand. She already exerts dominion over the rest of the home, this is *your* space, she should back off and allow you to have some fun. As long as your family's finances do not suffer from your hobby, you should feel free to pursue it as you see fit...
-RW- Anti-flamesuit already donned.

Thanks for the reply's, ideas and nice comments. I will give some of the these ideas a try and see what comes of it. I should say the only thing I won't try is telling my wife to pound sand. I did run the room correction to see if there would be much change. But you know it did not make many corrections......that could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view on room correction. It could be because of the Berhringer already doing its thing.

Yeah, telling the wife to 'pound sand' is probably not a good idea, though rlw does have a point about this being YOUR place in the house... The really nice thing about all this can just be the ongoing experimentation and figuring out which speaker configurations sound the best (any way to raise up that center?), but anyway thanks again - good job!, and keep the photos coming!

Congrats on your new gear and on your very nice work on the built-ins. Besides the gear, something else caught my eye; Stroh's Signature. I remember it well and really miss that brewing company that was once one of many attractive parts of Detroit. Too bad the city has gone to the dogs; forever, I fear.
Where are you in Michigan? I live in the Battle Creek area and grew up in Oakland County.
Three cheers for Michiganders and go Green! (sorry, couldn't resist)

(sorry, couldn't resist) Chuck I miss it too. We had a lot of fun with Signature beer in the day. I live about an hour and fifteen from you in Greenville. Spent a lot of time down in the Oakland area, my wife comes from that area. Of course around here we think of the whole area starting around Flint to be Detroit, small town life.

Hi xelah -
Politely explain to your wife that this is what's called "male menopause." Tell her you thought about a sports car or a mistress, but out of love and respect for her, you chose the stereo instead.
Might give her a different perspective...

Today I received and email from Emotiva saying my UMC-200 and UPA-700 is on its way. I'm so damned excited I could wet myself. . its time to get back into separates like the old days when nothing else mattered but beer and a kick ass stereo. Awesome! ...
