Hidden Jewels and Unsung Heroes

I'll play this game although I don't think my taste in music matches most people's here for the most part so I'll keep it to songs/musicians that I think might be appreciated here.

First off I'll go with Chet Faker, a 24 year old (could be 25 now) singer/songwriter from Australia. This guy is making waves...



Fantastic drummer if I may say so. Wow, just checked and that song has over a million views! Wasn't long ago when it was only 20,000.



The next artist will require quite a few videos to even begin covering his talent. He's done everything from death metal to more folksy stuff and everything in between. He is a true unsung hero IMO. I'll post the songs in chronological order as he's been in a few different bands.

First song from Dax Riggs is from his band Acid Bath. Don't worry, I won't post the death metal tunes haha.



Hmm, hard to find any decent quality songs from his time in Agents Of Oblivion. Looks like Rotten records decided to get everything removed from Youtube. Here is a link to one of the songs in decent quality.

Next song is from his time in Deadboy & The Elephantman and comes from the first album If This Is Hell, Then I'm Lucky. Hauntingly beautiful.



For the next album We Are Night Sky, he's really stripped it down.



Finally he released a couple albums under his own name. His songs are a lot shorter than usual but still in the same vein as those in We Are Night Sky.

I have to play this song. Clocking in at only 2:13, it always get's me singing along.



Was hard to pick a second song as there are some real gems on this album. Was a toss up between this and Spinning Song (probably should check that out too).



His last album Say Goodnight to The World was a bit of a letdown for me. Just didn't seem quite up to par with the rest of his stuff. That being said I truly love this song.

For my final suggestions, here is The Next Hundred Years. Stunning Canadian band with more talent than should be allowed. Criminally under appreciated. FYI, it's not actually 16 minutes long.



This one is a lot more upbeat and really showcases their talent.

along that lines you can mention Birthday Party (Nick Cave as well), Lydia Lunch, Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut and some others of the 'group' of bands/ artists who used to work together loosely in the 80s/ 90s/ 2k's. most of them still performing. used to be a closely interacting group of experimental/ avantgarde artists.

A little known rock band that started in the mid 80's is The Nails. A rock band with a sort of no-frills drums, guitar, sax, bass lineup. But it's the vocals and the lyrics that are really outstanding. Sometimes silly and often introspective, Marc Campbell is the force of this band.

This is a band that I think many would call an "intelligent" rock and roll band. I can easily see these guys being genuine, smart, fun people that would likely get you into a fist fight at a bar on a Saturday night, have no issues chasing different women every night of the week and go to church on Sunday. It would find it plausible to say that this is the rock and roll equivilent to the Boondock Saints.

There are two older releases, the first being Mood Swing, which to an audiophile won't be very good. The second release is Dangerous Dreams which I feel is a much stronger album and sounds very decent.

There have been two somewhat recent releases, Hotel For Women which is a remaster of an EP plus a lot of bonus tracks. I have not seen this disc in stock until just checking Amazon before writing this post, so it's in my shopping cart now. The other release is Corpus Christi. There's a comment that says this is not a "authorized" release but I have no knowledge of that, however I'll say it's a great album, the best I've heard of their sadly limited catalogue and among my personal top 5 albums.

Marcia Ball

For a few years, she was a regular at Summerfest here in Milwaukee. I stumbled upon one of her shows and loved it / went back a few times, and picked-up a few of her CDs. With warmer weather coming up (hopefully, maybe, sometime...?) Barbeque season will soon be upon us, and her tunes are perfect for hanging out, tendin' the fire, and sippin' the adult beverage of your choice.

She did an album with Angela Strehli, and Lou Ann Barton - quite a variety of styles and all three of these ladies "bring it".
I particularly liked their rendition of "I Idolize You" (originally by Ike Turner - terrible excuse of a human being, but talented writer...)
