From my perspective I chose the ERC-3 route primarily for the sound, I believe that it will sound better (not night and day though) than an Oppo 105 for playing CD's. Secondly, for movies I will eventually upgrade my Panansonic BD player to an Oppo 103 and the cost (in Australia) of an Oppo 103 and an ERC-3 is less than the cost of an Oppo 105 alone. So I see it as a win/win (one for sound and one for money) decision.
As a bonus, I'm replacing the sub woofer amp that is currently located in the main rack with a plate amp, so an ERC-3 will fill the space quite nicely. Wait there's more, it will have the Emotiva family look that the current subwoofer amp doesn't. That's a win/win/win/win.
Cheers Gary

I am interested in the ERC-3 because I want a dedicated CD player. I do have some SACD and a couple of DVD-A but I have an OPPO 103 for those Duties. The Majority of my music is red book or HDCD so I am excited to look at the ERC-3. I want to get a UMC-200 as well but probably by Christmas will have to Deciede on one as there will not be room in my budget for both.

(rofl)origonbill & Gary, why not just go with the DC-1 as I have ? Then you can add a PC later or other gear to run through it.for about the same money I think you end up with a better and more versatile DAC. Just thought I'd throw that out there, I'm very happy with mine. Later for HT if you wish you can go XSP-1!
There!!!! I've spent the rest of all your overtime,,,,He,,,,,,He,,,,,,
But really , give the DC-1 a thought.
Peace,
Nick

Peace, Nick I did think about a stand alone DAC Nick, but; 1. the budget wouldn't stretch to a DC-1 2. a DC-1 doesn't fit the look of the rest of my Emotiva gear 3. the ERC-3 has the same DAC as the DC-1, albeit in singular form 4. I suspect that there will be an XDA-3 Gen 2 along shortly 5. the DC-1 has a lot of features that I already have in my UMC-200 + USP-1 combo 6. I did consider an XDA-2 but #4 and #5 above apply to it equally 7. I just flat out like the idea of dedicated CD player Cheers Gary

I started saving for something and was so close. Now I got a Darby and have spent too much to be in the market for anything just yet. Nick

Nick Nick, you've already got the SACD and DVD-A and BluRay covered in the OPPO. Pull the trigger on the ERC-3 and you get to send it back in 30 days if it doesn't float yer boat. There is something special about a piece of Audio gear that does one thing very well. There is a pride in owning such a piece of gear. Use your Ears Man!! And send it back if you don't like it, but don't sit there thinking and get left behind. Your gear is already great, your just missing the Ultimate CD Dedicated Player....... the beave

Cheers Gary I'm not interested enough right now to read this entire 14 page thread (because I just bought a $3000 65" Panny ZT TV so my budget is shot right now), but you bring up a point I have to question. Is the sound upgrade for the Oppo 105 over the 103 just 2 channel? I was under the impression it was across the board. No? I thought that when you upgrade from a 103 to a 105 you got the same video, but you got better sound all around, all channels. Otherwise, what's the point? I mean if the great sound isn't carried over for multi-channel SACD, DVD-A or Blu-ray Audio, then the extra $700 isn't worth as much. I don't want a Universal player that only has awesome 2 channel sound, I want one that has that same hi-end level for all 7 channels. I thought that's what the 105 was for over the 103. Am I wrong? Currently, my Universal Denon DVD-Player sounds much better playing the same LPCM 24/96 DVD than my Panasonic Blu-ray player. With the Oppo 105 I was hoping to at least equal the sound of my Denon, AND be able to do the same with Blu-rays. Maybe that's not the case.

Are you wrong, not really, but maybe more information might help. The difference I found between the 103 and the 105 was only the DAC's, the video was exactly the same to me. The 105 has a better DAC (than the 103) for the stereo output and another better DAC for the other channels. I noticed a slight (not night and day) improvement in the stereo sound using the 105 when plugged into my USP-1. The problem with HT 5.1 use (of the 105 DAC's) is that in order to use it I had to bypass the equalisation of my UMC-200. So the effect of the better DAC was not relevant as the equalisation made much more of a difference. The equalisation in the UMC-200 kicks ass. Based on my experience (in my room, with my equipment, listing with my ears) was that the half of the 105's advantage was worth having, the stereo sound. But the other half, the HT sound, wasn't. I just couldn't justify the price difference (it's more than $700 in Australia) when for around half that I could get an ERC-3. The long term financial advantage of a separate CD player was also relevant, it means I only have to upgrade BD players to the 103 level (113, 123, 133 etc) spec not spend the considerable additional cost on the 105 level (115, 125, 135 etc) spec every time that video standards etc change. Cheers Gary

WoW, I see there are only 8 left for the 2nd round pre-order.I think that speaks volumes for Emotiva especially since this is the first time they ever took money and actually sold pre-orders.I can't wait to receive (listen) to mine.

They must be very busy. I emailed asking advantages over my ERC2 over a week ago. Wanted to know if it was worth the upgrade. Haven't heard a word from anyone.

I would send all emails to sales@emotiva.com.I asked yesterday morning if the ERC-3's were still shipping on December 13th.I received a response in about 30 minutes stating still estimating December 13th.I was told that I will receive tracking number when order is actually processed but they mentioned from UPS not FedEx?Did they switch shipping carriers?

Email was sent to sales@emotiva.com. Was surprised I didn't get a response, so rechecked to make sure the email was sent......it was. Maybe since I have the ERC2 they figure the improvement will be minimal at best.......or, they are selling so good, don't need to worry about answering questions unless a purchase has been made.
