How about making some Amp and Pre Amp kits with detailed instructions and all the parts so a noob could build them.

I recently bought a couple of modded Dynakit pieces that are nearly as old as I am--and have been having a great time with them.
New and with some sort of warranty--at real world prices--I'm in.

An Emotiva kit consists of a box of parts, pre-assembled. You just plug it in.

I built many things , either kits or from scratch.
This would be the worst move Emotiva could make as a company.

Going into the kit business would degrade the entire line. Look at the history. Dynaco had great affordable products, but for years it was hard to resale one because of the kit onus. No one wanted a kit built by another person. Old Dynaco equipment is still stymied by the kit heritage. I had 3 factory built Dynaco components - PAS-3x, FM5, and an AFM3 (still have the PAS-3x and the AFM5). Heathkit was entirely kits and I built many of them but their resale value was almost nil (decades later and I stress decades, both Dynaco and Heathkit are more capable of being resold because of their growing rarity).

All good points. I did not think about the support issues.

>> Heathkit was entirely kits...<<
Heathkit would factory-build your kit for an additional charge. I built an AR-15 receiver when I was 12 years old. It was a VERY ambitious project for me (hundreds of parts, LOTS of point-point wiring) and I almost sent it into the factory for them to complete. Fortunately, my Dad (a VERY accomplished EE) came to the rescue and bailed me out. Won't do that again...
-RW-
PS: The AR-15s were *very* good receivers, perhaps the best in the world back in 1968/69. And we used that receiver in our home system for about 5 years before replacing it with a Sansui 9090DB - the Dolby version of the 9090. One thing those old receivers had was really nice walnut or rosewood cases. I wish that look would come back into favor, it had a real touch of class...
PPS: I think Emo (or, perhaps, a Lounger) could do a brisk little business selling piano-black end-caps and trim pieces for their electronics. I know I would buy some in a heartbeat if they weren't too dear!!

It lasted 12 or 13 years as our main tv. There was a Heathkit store in Parma, Oh. in the 70's when I lived in Cleveland.

Heathkit, and Lafayette, fond memories for me. All we're left with now is a store from a leather goods company.

An Emotiva kit consists of a box of parts, pre-assembled. You just plug it in. Technically, one does have to plug the power cord into the unit AND the wall. I know this can stump some people...I wonder how many calls they get on that? And, I do remember Tandy! And, my first "hifi" was a Heathkit my Dad built...receiver, speakers, and turntable. I played Sgt. Pepper on that until the needle wore a groove through to the other side! Mark

No mention of Allied Knight Kits? I had a Star Roamer when I was a kid and later built a VTVM (vacuum tube volt meter) which had the advantage over the VOM of having a VERY high input impedance and thus minimal circuit loading.
My friends had a Heathkit Color TV which the WIFE assembled. Great set. The FIRST thing assembled was a built-in METER to ease further assembly.

You guys are working too hard. Just get an XSP-1, 2 XPA-1. Some XLR Emotiva interconnects, spice up with your source of choice, put it together with music to taste, and you got a great kit!

Seriously yep there are kits out there if you got that DIY fever. Akitika.com has some things you could build. Instructions are easy peasy.

A LOT of the 'kit guys' are into BOTTLEHEAD. This is mostly Tube stuff and well regarded. The directions / instructions are SAID to be pretty clear and easy. I'd make sure my soldering skills were 'up to snuff' before attempting, though. A good Weller soldering station or one of the Hakko stations would work. The Hakko? The one for 100$ is a good value but for the Deep Pocket types, the model UP LINE is wonderful, but $$$$ at around 250$ bottlehead.comGiven the mostly low powers, you'll need some pretty sensitive speakers, say OVER 95db to get the most out of 'em. Post some pictures when you get a project going!
