The Stereo 70 is a classic...... and certainly one of the best low-powered tube amps ever made. Incidentally: Specifications (which are quite excellent for a tube amp) Power Output: 35 watts continuous, 80 watts peak each channel. Frequency Response: ±.5 dB from 10 cps to 40 kc. Power Response: 20 cps to 20 kc within 1 dB of 35 watts at less than 1% distortion. Intermodulation Distortion: Less than 1% at 35 watts (normally about .5%). Less than .05% at 1 watt. Hum and Noise: Inaudible; better than 90 dB below rated power. Sensitivity: 1.3 volts rms input for 35 watts out. Output Impedances: 4, 8, and 16 ohms each channel. Damping Factor: 15. Minimum Channel Separation: 55 dB Power Consumption: 190 watts 50/60 cps .... Introduced: 1959 Price: $99.95 kit $129.95 assembled

I remember the prices for those kits, like the Stereo 70 being crazy low. I wonder how much you could get for a NOS kit? Let's say you found a warehouse with a couple DOZEN of 'em New-In-Box and SEALED. The electrolytic caps would need immediate replacement, and I'd swap out FILM resistors for CARBON, in the signal path, but WOW…...

I built this Bottlehead OTL Crack Headphone amp this weekend. Worked on first power up. Sounds very good. This the third kit I've built in the last couple of weeks. Previously built Hagerman Labs Cornet3 (Tube phono) and Piccolo2 (Phono stepup). -CB

Chris, What kind of soldering station do you own? I'm thinking of a Weller or Hakko for me…..but am open to 'other' if someone has a good recommendation.
My last build was a DIY version of a simple OPAMP headphone amp. The Cmoy, by name. Fun, but getting it compact enough for an Altoids case is tough for these bad old eyes.

I have always used Weller for years. Trust that brand I do. However, I know there are going to be some good competition. Like Hollis and Dee were competitors in wave Solder when I was way way much younger.

After exhaustively researching this recently , and comparing with the Weller, I chose the HAKKO FX-888D.
I'm very pleased with it.

My last build was a DIY version of a simple OPAMP headphone amp. The Cmoy, by name. Fun, but getting it compact enough for an Altoids case is tough for these bad old eyes. I use the widely used Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station. It's modestly price and tips, etc are easily obtained. I'm sure there are better ones out there but the Weller has met my needs. I may go years between DIY projects. My current 3 projects in 2 weeks is mainly due to the bad weather (more snow yesterday!) and wanting to clear out my back log. Having said that, I do find it a lot of fun. So maybe Mr. Hagerman of Hagerman Labs will have a new Kickstarter project this year. His kits are the best IMHO! -CB

The Weller and the Hakko are 'most' popular. I'll look at the Weller WLC100 and I think the Hakko 888 is up at Fry's for <100$
My current iron is an UNGAR. The light blue handle. This is VERY old and tips and elements MAY be found on EPray, but certainly not at the local hardware or even up a Fry's. Its about soldered the last and needs to be retired. I'm guessing 35 to 40 years on. I don't think I had it when I lived in Florida which stopped about '74 or so.
You can still get some NOS, but TIPS are rare. The element has a male thread.
