im using a sony 5 disc cd player 150.00.. cdp-ce500.. if i ran the optical out to the xda 2 and the xlrs out to the xsp 1
think i would get a sound quality improvement versu using the analog outputs of the sony to the xsp 1?
or would i get a better sq improvement just using a new cd player like the cd 1?
thanks

I'm putting my vote in here for the CD-1 or if you can find a used ERC-2...?

I'd put the vote in for going with a DAC and then upgrading the CD player to a music streamer of some sort.

From what I've been reading, the CD-1 analog output would be close to the quality of the XDA-2's output. I think that spending money on the XDA-2 or a DC-1 would give you not only higher quality but more expandabilty.
So to answer your question. Yes, using the optical output to a DAC will improve your sound quality. Not that I've heard either the CDP-CE500 or the Denon AVR-3313CI Networking Home Theater Receiver with AirPlay and 3 Zone Capacity, but just assuming that they are producing the usual "consumer grade" audio quality.
Have you tried using the optical output to the Denon to see if you like that better?

Well I have my older Pioneer Elite connected up to the PT-7030 via digital coax and the ERC-1 still sounded better, so even using both as a transport the ERC-1 is more detailed than the Pioneer, I say if CD's are your main enjoyment now go for the CD-1 and you could always grab say XDA-2 or DC-1 down the road when and if you expand into PC stuff, comparing FLAC from the PC and an actual CD in my once owned ERC-1 to me the CD still sounded better, but we all have different ears and equipment I still say CD-1 or used ERC-1/ERC-2 for you right now as it seems you will get the most use out of it, remember your system is only as good as your source.... What it does your CD player just read the one and zero on the disk and output it on optical out for the XDA-2 to decode and process the information. The sound signature is in the DAC so if you prefer the sound of the Sony use its analog out and if you don't you can bypass it and use an external DAC like XDA-2. You can use XDA-2 as DAC and preamp. XDA-2 direct to amp provide the best sound quality.

Optical from Sony to XDA-2 and XLR from XDA-2 to XSP-1 is just fine. The XDA-2 will handle the jitter. No need to buy anything else except maybe something for streaming music. No advantage going XDA-2 to amps directly either.

I'm also on the XDA-2 side, it should be a nice improvement to the Sony, and has the added flexibility to work with other sources should you desire to add them to your system (I know you'll rip those CDs someday :~)

The availability of multiple inputs INCLUDING USB is a huge plus as it can allow you to use your computer at anytime.
