Love love love this thread!!!
Btw a tad off topic sort of. But I find it odd you put the xda on bottom and USP on top. I do the opposite. I think bigger should be on bottom. Just IMHO haha.
Keep the reviews and journey coming!!!!

Great looking room Garbulky. I know you have a lot of suggestions coming at you but I would try XDA-1 (as a dac) into the USP-1 into the XPA-2 and see how that sounds. Either way, I will be looking forward to your full review, with both speakers' subs hooked up. Hi PK. The XDA-1 is in DAC mode to USP-1 to XPA-2. Sounds very good. Love love love this thread!!! I actually wondered about that. The USP-1 wasn't mine so I wanted to be as careful as I could with it. But I think it should be okay as the XDA-1 has rubber feet and wouldn't hurt anything. Thanks for reading! I hope to try balanced cables with the XDA-1.

Have you tried setting the volume to say...60 on the XDA-1 and thus allowing more freedom on the volume control of the USP-1, I did this when I had that combo.....why did I sell that stuff...lol...oh yah I remember now, to get new stuff. Wouldn't it be nice to buy stuff and keep it instead of having to sell gear for more gear Chad

My XDA-1 has a lossy digital control which I try to keep as high as possible. I also happen to have a passive pre-amp which maybe I can put into the output of the USP-1.

To be honest for me in my system anyways I never noticed a difference when using the volume control of the XDA-1 to have any loss in quality, 60 would prob be a safe place to be IMO, not sure if you would actually discern any difference, I couldn't Chad

The volume control on the XDA-1 is not as bad as some think. I seriously doubt you'd be able to hear a difference between 60 and 80 other than volume.

I agree - The volume control on the XDA-1 isn't too picky about settings. Between 60 & 80, I can't hear any difference. The XDA-1 however, may be a bit picky about the output impedance that it's driving. When playing into my preamps, it sounds great. When playing into a single power amp directly, it sounds great. When playing into two paralleled power amps directly, it gets thin sounding. I suspect that it just may not like the (lower) impedance loading of the paralleled amps. Of course, I could be wrong... But that's what I hear in my equipment. If my "doesn't like low impedance" theory is right, then it might sound heavenly driving older tube amps directly (they often have higher input impedances than modern solid-state power amps). If I remember correctly, some of my old tube amps had up to 150K ohms on their inputs. Typical (modern) solid state amps seem to have about 10K ohms. If you parallel two of them, you get a 5K ohm load. Does it matter? It seems to with my equipment, but again, I haven't tried any wide variety of equipment, so I'm speculating. Garbulky's passive 150K ohm passive preamp should be an "easy" load (although with potential frequency variations). Since he now has the USP-1 going on, both loading and frequency variation should be minimized, and he should hear more clearly what his USP-1 is actually doing. Based on what I heard last time I listened to his system, I'm sure it sounds great. Now if he can only remember to hook up ALL the parts of his speakers...
