So I dug through several threads today on the Crown XLS 1500, 2000 and or 2500 pro amps and it's potential as an home consumer solution. So the things are relatively cheap especially if I look at the gently used market. So I welcome those of you who may have these in a home 2 channel setup and if known specifically in an Magnepan MMG or bigger setup. I have been looking at the 1500 specifically as it appears to be falling into my "play with" price range. I saw a thread I think where Andrew R bridged to XLS 2000's for MMG's and that it a bit too rich for my "play with" consideration.
So what do y'all think? Would a 1500 drive MMG's? How about 2.7QR's? And if so, any thoughts on whether it would sound decent or like crap.

From my five minutes with an XLS-1000, it certainly has plenty of power. I ended up returning it and getting three 1500's because it was a package deal. They'll be driving subs though I do plan to play around with them on some normal speakers.

Do these models have fans in them? If so, that would be my main concern due to the noise they would produce.

Do these models have fans in them? If so, that would be my main concern due to the noise they would produce. All the amps in the XLS Series of amplifiers have fans internal, however, and this is from personal experience, they have to be driven pretty hard for pretty long before they kick on. That is to say that after 8 to 10 hours of straight play in my system(s) I've yet to hear them kick in. Now, with Maggies they might hit that threshold sooner, but I seriously doubt it. In other words, I wouldn't worry about the fans.

I concur on the fans (not that Andrew requires backing up!). The XLS1500's are super quiet for a "pro" amp. Sound quality and quantity is definitely there. I'm currently running two of them in bridge mode to power my subs ATM, and quite enjoy them. I haven't heard the fans kick in once after nearly a year of use. I've even just used them for an outdoor party running relatively power hungry speakers for over 24hrs (stereo w/2ohm loads @ decent levels) last week, and they remained very cold and quiet. So far I've been very impressed with the crowns XLS's.

THanks all for the input, but I keep hearing mostly the driving subs perspective. Has anyone had a decent amount of time (i.e. more than as demo for a review length of time) with an XLS 1500 or greater in a 2 or 2.1 setup to vet the overall sound performance longer term. I recall having a semi long chat with Lonnie last year at Emofest on the pros and woes of class D for two channel long term listening and while I do not recall the details, the net net was nah, not really all that great for that, but the tech continues to evolve so we'll see.

I've heard an XLS model. I found it has a different sound signature to Emotiva amps mainly in the treble. I liked it and it is powerful. Not sure if that's what you want for Maggies though in terms of sound signature...

why not order one from Amazon? Worst thing you're out is the return shipping cost. At 9lbs boxed, its less than 10 bucks.

If you don't like it, sell it to me. I need some "pro-sound" amps that are lightweight. THis makes your purchase a "zero cost" option (other than shipping). Therefore get one and try it!

I've used pro amps many times to drive stereo speakers or HT set-ups, it was the only way I could afford the power I wanted/liked at a price I could afford. Well at least till I found out about Emotiva, I can't comment on that amp with those speakers but I can agree with Andrew about fan's.
As long as the fans are thermally cued and not constant I doubt you will ever notice them, If your listening at low levels they almost never run and if your driving the speakers that hard the fans power up your music will be so loud you won't notice the fans. Fans almost never came on in stereo listening for me, only time they used to come on was in hot weather when watching movies at reference levels and higher in long loud action sections.

I'm very curious to hear what you think. I've been thinking about the crowns for my MMG-based theater setup. I was really looking for a PA7-350 but since that's off the table, I want to know what else is out there. Post back with your thoughts.

I'm happy with mine but the only gripe is the gain structure (+4db vs -10db for consumer gear).
