I had an XLS1500 amp for several months driving my ERTs. I found it to be as good as any amp I've ever owned. There is no 'signature' sound that I found from listening to it at high and low volumes. It never ran out of steam and I never did hear the fan turn on. I would take Lonnie's brush-off response to questions about class 'D' as a signal that Emotiva won't be utilizing class 'D' amps any time soon. I would also suggest Lonnie sit down and take a listen to a good digital amp - it may open jaded eyes.

I'm very curious to hear what you think. I've been thinking about the crowns for my MMG-based theater setup. I was really looking for a PA7-350 but since that's off the table, I want to know what else is out there. Post back with your thoughts. Ryu, I will not have that as my HT setup, but I do have a 5 channel MMG HT setup which I run through a Sherbourn SR-120. So far so good. I was looking for a 2 channel low cost amp that is rated to handle the low impedance with decent wattage to drive the lower efficiency Maggies to decent volumes as I was looking at a set of MMG's, SMGa's or my current 2.7's safely and with good sound.

I think there is NO DOUBT that the Crown amps are capable of driving the Maggies quite satisfactorily. And they look to be among the least expensive amps that will do so. Get 'em and don't look back...

I have been using 3 DC XLS1500's now for about 2 1/2 years. They are super quiet, extremely powerful, high fidelity, very versatile, and very light weight. I use two of them in a bi-amp 2.0 setup with my Polk Lsi9's. The 9's are 4 ohm, and require a lot of power to make them sing! I have had these baby's cranked for long periods of time and have never heard even once the fans come on. They run so cool that I even leave the dust covers on them and they still never even get warm. Also, they are so power efficient I have two of them plugged into my APC H15 power conditioner. Never once has the fault light ever come on on the APC. Class D efficiency is amazing. I still have my Class A/B Adcoms that weigh about 60lbs a piece (vs about 10 lbs ea. for the XLS1500's), but the DC XLS's are superior. Class D technology has come a long way, and I think the Harman Kardon owned Crown division is at the forefront of this technology.
BTW, I think one of the better places to buy used ones are at guitarcenter.com. Go to their used section. I have bought all 3 of mine from GC at under 300.00 a piece. GC thoroughly checks out their used gear, and stands behind their stuff so no worries there.
I think getting a XLS1500 is a good decision.

I've used a Crown XLS-1500 to drive Maggie 1.6 speakers. AWESOME! Don't let anyone tell you this isn't a good match. The Crowns can drive 2-ohm loads in stereo, so they completely don't care about the Maggies' 4-ohm loading. I also listened to a pair of Crown XLS-2000 amps in bridged mono mode - Despite the power, I preferred the sound of the amps in stereo (maybe it's just me...). So just for giggles, I'm about to try my current Martin Logan electrostatics with the Crown XLS-2000. My gut feeling is that they'll be just as AWESOME with the MLs as with the Maggies. Don't get me wrong - I still think that the Emotiva power amps may have a nose up on the Crowns in the midrange, but it's so close that on any given day, I might prefer either. I think it may be time for another amplifier shoot-out: Audio Research D90 vacuum tube power amp vs. Emotiva XPA-5 power amp vs. Crown XLS-2000. Front end = Oppo BDP-105 & (Garbulky's) Emotiva Stealth DC-1. Speakers = Martin-Logan Aeon i & Axiom M-80 V.3.5. We'll need Mrs. Garbulky to officiate - her ears are best among us. The additional option that the Crown offers a built-in adjustable crossover. I can run a full-bandwith signal to the Crown (via XLR!) and let the Crown throw away everything below 80 Hz. I can run the mono below-80-Hz signal directly from the Oppo to the subwoofer. Using the Oppo as volume controller, both outputs will scale equally and remain at equivalent levels regardless of volume. garbulky? novisnick? Y'all in?
