. I've got a pair of Magnepan 1.6s on the way soon. I doubt that they'll do much better than the DefTechs, but I'd never be satisfied until I at least tried them. Therefore, one more "bucket list" item down. Thanks - Boomzilla Glad to hear! Very glad to hear!

I know right. This may well lead to a purchase much farther down the road. Maggies have always been in my sights, now I get to hear one!

By moving the DefTech 2004s closer together, by tilting them back slightly, by getting the sound absorber panels directly behind the backs of the speakers, by pulling the speakers yet farther from the back wall, by aiming them perpendicular to the back wall without toe-in, and by using the "tone control" to back off the treble, I've gotten the speakers to sound pretty good. Not so good as other speakers in the house, mind, but better than they initially sounded.
It took LOTS of doing the hokey-pokey around the living room with the speakers before an acceptable position was found. I've not had speakers before quite as hard to place as these. All's well that ends well, and they do sound pretty good. I still don't think that they're "keepers," but they sound an order of magnitude better than when they first arrived.
End of story. Anyone want to buy some GREAT home theater speakers with built-in subs?

I've got a pair of Magnepan 1.6s on the way soon. Every audiophile needs to hear Magnepans. MartinLogans also I think. In fact every audiophile should live with a pair of Maggies for a year or two if possible IMHO. There will be certain songs, by certain artists that will be so beautiful, like you've never heard them before. Other songs, not so much. It took me a couple years to sort out the pros and cons of Magnepans on a personal level. I didn't need to own Martin Logans to know they weren't for me. All speakers are a compromise. Every audio enthusiast needs to find the pair that is compromised in your direction. Peace.
