Answer to previous question from Jim, just checked that my XPA-1L at iddle for 70 minutes in A/B mode (blue lights and no music playing) gets a little warm. On the other hand my UPA-1 is cool to the touch. Jim - How much heat does your XPA-1 put out?

Ivanhoe, there is no reason for concern! Hot is how they run and what beautiful music do they make. I've owned these amps and only returned them for a lot more power, but I wish that I had the $ to have kept them for my other system. Sad for me, but had to sacrifice for the power. Now that's one heck of a run on sentence! I had a set of Sherbourn C-12 fans sitting on each and never gave it another thought. There keepers, enjoy!
Peace,
Nick

And they also are 2X the size of the 1L, so have loads more heat-sink surface area too.

An A class amp is not an A/B class amp,it transitions into one. my XPR-1s run warm but that is yet another class amp, H class. Would you compare a Class A to a Class A/B to a Class H? I think not. I'm not trying to ridicule but be helpful, Class A amps run hot, pure and simple. Peace, Nick

Peace, Nick When you're comparing the XPA-1L to the XPA-1 -- with both running in A/B, it's not an apples to peanuts comparison. The XPA-1L is a HALF size XPA-1 with a bias switch. That's almost word for word how Lonnie has described it. We're not talking about Class A mode. The XPA-1L WILL remain in Class A below 35W if the switch is set to Class A. If you're under 35W, for all intensive purposes it IS a class A amp. It's running as a space heater because of the very high bias current. Not everybody is running the 1L in Class A mode......... The XPA-1L and XPA-1 should idle at relatively similar temperatures in class A/B. In Class A, no questions asked it'll be hot, but I believe the OP understood this from the very beginning (and people keep bringing it up). I don't know what the bias current is in A/B - but it's probably a few watts - like most Emotiva A/B amps. The 1L in class A/B mode should NOT be hot sitting idle. Now, if I said my XPA-1 idles at around 45W and my XPR-5 idles at 65-80W, now that would be apples to peanuts

They really are a great set of amps though! Peace, Nick

Hi Ivanhoe, I own a trio of XPA-1Ls and they do run a little warm in A/B mode. Actually, the 1L runs warmer (in A/B mode) than all my other Emotiva amplifiers. Also remember that all amplifiers heat up while in use. Temperatures will increase as you push the amp harder. Nothing to be concerned about. It's completely normal. Just be sure the amp has enough room to breathe. Don't block the vents and you'll be fine.

Jim, thanks for the reply regarding your XPA-1 and big thanks for everyone's feedback. To be on the safe side, I plan to buy a pair of fans to put on top of my XPA-1L. Any recommendations?

When I had these amps I placed one on to of each. There effective and good looking,,,,,,,,,like me!!!,,,,He,,,,,,,He,,,,,, Nick

this is in regards to the cosmetics of the XPA-1L. I notice what looks like a serial number on the front panel. who would put a serial number there? I hope the gen 2 does not have that. I also think these amps should come standard with black trim and with silver trim optional.

I also think these amps should come standard with black trim and with silver trim optional. The XPA-1L does have a laser-etched serial number on the front panel (lower left). Emotiva's larger XPA-1 monoblock had this same feature for Gen1 and it's carried over for Gen2 as well. It's likely the XPA-1L Gen2 will keep the SN on the front along with the upgrade aesthetics. I've owned this product for over a year and don't find it to be an issue.

i don't really just sit and stare at the amp, i mostly just just listen to the music. what would one gain by putting a serial number there? however, i just wish emo would "rethink" when they decide to do something like this. hopefully the engineers can read this.

Actually, the front mounted serial number is an indication of the exclusivity and small target market nature of the amp. The XPA-1 has this feature also.1 I'm sure the Gen II WILL have this feature.
