Andrew, Lonnie, Jessica, Ray, Keith, Dan, Nick, I have the ERC-1 and it performs as advertised. I would upgrade to the ERC-3 if it played the higher fidelity SACD disks. I know the Analog Devices support the SACD if you write the software. Is there a specific reason why you do not go for the full gusto on this source device? Also, have you guys in the lab done a side by side where you would care to post your impressions? Thanks in advance!

Emotiva is well aware that the AD1955 DAC chip can handle SACD and would love to be able to "turn on" that feature, but Sony would have them in court for violating their patent. Sony makes a huge income from suing companies that violate their intellectual property rights. Sony's licensing Agreement for SACD is very complex and expensive. Sony has historically taken a very stubborn negotiation stance with their licensing agreements and they are unwilling to negotiate reasonable licensing terms for its intellectual properties. When the ERC-1 came out I talked to Lonnie about why they did not License SACD and he said that Sony was unwilling to negotiate the fee structure. Emotiva wanted to offer SACD as part of the ERC-1 but it would have proved too expensive. Sony has let several of its intellectual properties die on the vine rather than negotiate reasonable rates to License them. Betamax is one good example. Betamx was far superior to VHS and could well have dominated the market had Sony been willing to negotiate their fee structure, but due to their stubborn stance VHS won, despite the fact that Betamax was the far superior technology.

Wow. Thanks RR for explaining the history behind the ERC and SACD. I suspected that it came down to Sony and some licensing issues. I appreciate the history lesson! I was familiar with the history of Betamax. Always sad when a manufacturer causes the death of a good product due to stubbornness.

This is very true and people need to understand the logistics and the money behind it. That being said, it's a scientific fact that MOST people, in double blind and triple blind tests, could NOT reliably discern an SACD music signal from a Redbook CD music signal playing at the same time. Now stop for a moment and re read that. I'm NOT saying that one is Better than the other, what has been scientifically proven is that Most people could not distinguish reliably an SACD music track when synced up and playing from the Redbook CD 44.1 version. That being said, the market for SACD is very small. A company like Emotiva HAS to concentrate on Value and Salability of it's Products. The Oppo Brand pretty much has the market on these formats so why throw yourselves to the wolves? I'm happy that Emotiva has the ERC-3 coming out! It might just very well be my last Dedicated CD player. Now, is it going to shut off by itself after 30 minutes like my NAD and Marantz players??? the beave My room:

Speaking of racks, that's a particularly nice one, what brand is it? BTW, my history readings say it was the availability of porn on VHS that killed Betamax, not Sony. Cheers Gary

Cheers Gary The Rack is a Bell'oggetti. Got it from J&R back in 2000 for $700. Nice piece indeed. And your right on the money with your VHS theory. I specifically remember being a subscriber to 'Video' magazine back in the day and yes indeed, there was a section that was 'Sealed' within the magazine that marketed porn on VHS mainly. I also remember the magazine staff stating, after VHS had taken over the market that they were putting the 'nasty' stuff toward the back of the magazine. Very Well said. the beave
