Thanks for starting the thread, great idea! How do you like that Getz/Gilberto album? I have only been listening on MOG and I really enjoy all the tracks. I had read that the sacd was really good so I will give the Pure Blu-ray a shot. Delivery is showing for tomorrow.

I don't have a lot of hi res music, but the high res deluxe edition of In Utero from HD Tracks is really good. It contains the original release, remastered, but has not been compressed to kingdom come. It also has some demo versions, and random other bits, but for me the price of admission is worth it for the new 2013 remix version. Growing up on this record, I was afraid of what the 2013 mix would be like. I have to admit that I really like the new mix. It's not much of a departure from the regular mix, but tosses in some minor things that were edited out of the original mix (coughing, additional noise at the end of the tracks, things like that). Anyway, I find it to be a fresh take on an old favorite and can highly recommend it!

When I get it let me listen for a couple of days and I will send it out to you so you can do a comparison. I am all about sharing good music and being able to try stuff. If we can get a couple of members together and get a good swap rotation going that would be great!

I have that Blood Sweat and Tears on vinyl. Parts of it sound a bit dated as far as the material goes, but it was well recorded for a pop/rock record, had some wonderful dynamics and nice sounding instruments and voice in general. So the tapes are good!

The SHM-SACDs of Breakfast in America and Talking Book are fantastic. Smooth, yet very detailed. The latest batch of SACDs have several being well reviewed.
Maybe things are getting better.

Tonight I put in Nirvana Nevermind on blu ray pure audio. The interface on the disk is just fine and works just like any other cd. Some people had concerns about using the menu but it was easy. From the first riff of the first track was impressed with the huge very deep sound stage. Kobain was out in front of the speakers and was nicely separated from the rest of the band . My favorite part was Dave's drumming which was very powerful. Sitting 12 feet away I felt like my head was between the cymbals. Needless to say I am very happy with the disc. While in each song I tried each of the three audio formats with little to no difference between them and in the end the preferred format was the strait 96/24 PCM.
After one time through the disc I put in an original 90's version and it sounded like s**t, dynamically compressed and muddy. This disc really sucks! Next was the super deluxe 2 cd edition that I had which was a huge improvement over the original in that it was louder but was still quite flat sounding. These two will be off to the cd store for trade in!
As you can tell I'm not a lyrical poet but do enjoy sharing my thoughts. If you would like to try the disc shoot me a pm.

Cookie Marenco at Blue Coast Records is now offering most new releases for $12, in all formats, for 30 days. Those include 96/24 and 2.8MHz DSD. Latest is a folk-bluegrass group, The Driftless. That price expires Dec. 15. thedriftless.downloadsnow.net/long-for-the-doryThe latest release in her Mahler series, Symphony #7, is $20 in all formats. (These were recorded by the San Francisco Symphony, not Marenco. But Blue Coast is handling the downloads).

Having embraced the digital music file technology some years ago, I really began to enjoy music again to the extent it prompted me to upgrade my system again. But I'm jumping head of myself so let me start at the beginning... After adopting the ubiquitous iPod music solution for my daily commute, I began to wonder what I could do at home to replicate the experience or even make it better. It started with a server to hold all my documents, photos and ripped CD's. At the time I was feeding the audio out of the server via analog out to my Denon AVR, using JRiver and my laptop to control the music. Soon, I realized that this was not optimum and that I needed a better quality solution. So, I swapped in an XDA-1 DAC and fed that via Toslink from the server, then analog out from the DAC to the AVR. Better but not the best I could do. Keeping the DAC in place, I purchased a SimAudio MiND 180 streamer and downloaded their control software to my iPad. I added Ethernet and a switch near the system, then connected it all up. No more computer limited audio! At that point, all my music was plucked off the server by the streamer via Ethernet. Following a complete interconnect, Ethernet and speaker cable upgrade, I re-ripped my CD's to 16bit/44.1kHz FLAC and began downloading more FLAC files from sites such as Linn Records, HD Tracks and others in 24 bit/48kHz up to 24bit/192kHz formats. And along with the FLAC file increases, my mp3 files shrank to ZERO. I still download a track or two or three from iTunes for the iPod but am seriously considering selling that antique off for a nice Astell & Kern portable unit for the daily train ride to and from work. Each upgrade and increase in my hi-rez music files led me to yet more upgrades and more music files. My XDA-1 is now helping my combination new tech/old skool 2 channel system upstairs (McIntosh C28/McIntosh MR77/Emotiva UPA-1's/ADS L880's) stream via Sonos; and the new DAC, a Musical Fidelity M1DAC, provides the digital to analog conversion for the downstairs system, which feeds the Sherbourn PT-7030 pre/pro. Of course, this led me to one more upgrade, the addition of a new (to me) pair of Aerial Acoustic Model 8 speakers with the 8B crossover modification. All I can say is be careful...adopting new musical formats can lead to a whole new set of equipment upgrades.

I went ahead and purchased David Elias' Acoustic Trio DSD Sessions and must say the sound quality is excellent. Playing the native DSD files from my Oppo 103's analog outputs to my XSP-1 pro produce a very satisfying experience. Very lifelike acoustic guitar.
