I would definitely recommend Skype for Internet-Internet calls. Skype also has (or at least they used to) an option that lets you call from your computer to users with land lines (or regular cell phones). (It wasn't free, but at least used to be VERY cheap, for domestic US calls; I don't know about international.) I have used skype it's best used for international calls, (I use to use skype to call a girlfriend in Russia) but is not like a replacement home phone system. To use skype for calling normal phones it's not very practical for regular use and is a prepaid type service. Ooma on the other hand is better than any home phone system I've ever had including AT&T or any deluxe systems that are expensive with high monthly rates. But with Ooma I have a nice deluxe home phone system and no matter how much or where I call in the US (some international areas are also included free) I only pay a tax fee which is about $3.00 a month and that's my total cost anymore period. I have used Ooma since 2009 my equipment paid for itself a long time ago. Before I went to Ooma I was using Vonage which was not nearly as good as Ooma and I was paying about $25.00 a month with Vonage I have tried many systems Ooma is best in my opinion. great quality and low cost.

Who bills you for the $3 /month. I'm thinking of going with something different to save $$ once my digital phone subscription runs out. Can you keep your same number with ooma? Thanks.

Ooma bills me the $3.00 each month I have it automatically paid each month, Ooma calls it a tax but I am sure it is just a way for them to make something for their services. I just looked it's actually $3.73 a month. You can either get a new number for free or have your old phone number moved (ported) to Ooma there is a $39.99 charge to have your old phone number ported to Ooma.
