I'm getting a weird smell when they've been on for a while in class A - or at least one of them. Kind of smells like a ballast in a flourescent bulb burning out. Doesn't seem to effect the sound yet. Any ideas?

How long have you had them and how long have you had them at this temperature (all figures approximate)?

a burning smell is never a good sign! i have no emo amps, but i am sure if that would be a common thing, you would have read about it here before. to be on the save side i would give emo support a call! if you say it smells like a ballast, it might be a transformer smoking up. as i said, go the save route, call them, see what emo's tech's think about it!

I have a vague recollection this has come up before. Sorry but I can't remember any details but hopefully someone with a better memory than me will chime in. You could try searching the lounge.
Dave.

I once had a moth fly into a Class A amp seeking warmth and got itself cooked in the process. A rather foul smell emanated. Maybe just have a sticky beak inside and check if you can see the source.
Cheers Gary

You're right, Dave, it has been on here before but it's rare. The manufacturing process in electronics is not 100% and sometimes, after the boards are assembled and tested, there is a repair that needs to be made. While all the boards for Emotiva products are assembled by machine, all rework is done by hand. Sometimes that rework is not as good as other rework performed and can result in a bit of an "ozone" smell when the equipment is new. It quickly burns off; hence why I asked if the equipment was new. Also, some people are a bit sensitive to that "new" smell of electronics. Again, it'll burn off with use.

When I received my tube integrated amp the first week or so it smelled like it had been several years on an oil tanker the smell dissipated after a week or so. It gets really hot even when idling. I think my amp was just breaking in. I'll see if I get a similar experience when I start using my XPA-100's.

Hey guys - sorry, I posted this as a guest because I was on my phone...Anyway, that's exactly it - it is an "ozone" smell. The XPA-1L's are probably about 2-3 months old. I believe I had them on for around 2-3 days on Class A. Luckily I live in Nashville, so maybe I can give them a call this week and get them down there. I'm a musician and use these for ProAc Studio 100's...I didn't think I had noticed anything sonically, but last night, I started getting paranoid I was hearing some distortion...(could be my mixing ) Anyway - I would imagine if there was a failure, it would be highly unlikely for there to be a failure in both of the mono blocks. So - I would assume if I was hearing a problem, it would be coming just from one speaker. I'm embarrassed to say that I've had these on the carpet beside each other - certainly getting ventilation on the top, but maybe not enough from the bottom. I'll have to get something to put them on. Someone on my pro audio forum (www.realgearonline.com - drop by!) suggested I open it up and see if any caps were visibly blown, but I don't want to void any sort of warranty...

Give us a call and bring 'em by for a check up, but is your carpet melting/burning? They need ventilation on all four sides.
