If I bought a product and it damaged other products I owned, I would expect the company to reimburse me for the other damaged product and then I would cease to do business with the company that makes the faulty product. Sorry, but Emo doesn't sound like it's got their mfg up to snuff, or maybe partly a design issue? Amps shouldn't have these kinds of problems if they were designed, tested, and mfg properly. I'll spend more for a better designed, tested and made product. I still fail to realize why people need such high power amps when the speakers they use can't even handle that much power to begin with. 600 watts for a speaker that probably only can handle 100 watts? Plenty of low power Class A amps can drive speakers at high volumes. I remember back in the 70;s where a 75 watt McIntosh amp drove a Klipsh LaScala out ear piercing volume levels. I personally think that people don't need to drive their speakers with so much power, or if they do, get power amps that are designed better. Sometime is wrong with a power amp smokes upon unboxing it and plugging it in. Oh well.

it's not about high spl's … but rather having perfect control of the speaker… this makes for less distortion from the membranes

Hi SoT,
Thanks for your post.
Just before I was about to place an order for two XPA-1Ls, I stumbled across your comments on the lounge. I was searching for any comments about how Emotiva handled warranty and service issues for customers who reside outside the US, for 'I (too) come from the land down under'
I look forward to hearing how the good folks at Emotiva resolve your issue. Specifically, replacement of the failed XPA-1L and who pays for the shipping cost of the replacement unit.
Subject to hearing how Emotiva resolved your issue, I’ll decide whether I hit the order button or not.
Regards Pure Audio

Can we get an update on this? I am interested in this amp line and would like to know the end of the story.

I guess it is true about only posting when things are bad...... Looks like the OP hasn't been back since Jan 14th. That's too bad. I can only assume that it was sorted out ages ago. There were some minor issues when the 1L was released, but it seems like they were sorted out pretty quickly.

I recently had a "high quality German engineered" vaccum cleaner go up in smoke. It happens.

So here's a question:
Should we switch an amp on (perhaps a few times), and make sure that there's no smoke, auto shutdown, etc. before we connect it to the preamp and speakers?
I ask because there are some issues to turning a tube amp on when it's not connected to a speaker.

Don't worry. Unlike tube amps, there are no issues whatsoever with turning on a solid state amp with no speakers connected. (At worst, a few older solid state amps could be damaged if you were to crank them up way past full volume with no speakers connected. ) So here's a question: Should we switch an amp on (perhaps a few times), and make sure that there's no smoke, auto shutdown, etc. before we connect it to the preamp and speakers? I too am having problems with my 1L going into the protective mode. Followed customer service advise of shutting down and unplugging but fix only lasted a week and now it is resuming this behavior. Called again and was shocked that I would be responsible for return postage to have unit fixed as this sees to be a documented defect with these units. Amp is currently only 8 months old. The attitude was you saved money buying from us which maybe true upfront but when one considers the time to box up truck off and pay postage then be without an amp for several weeks at least it hardly seems worth it. Next products I purchase will be from my local audio store where this hassle and expense are not necessary.

if I purchased at a local store I would just need to carry it in to be serviced. I have several other amps 30 and 40 years old without ever having a problem. From my reading it seems this product had problems from the start.

I have owned a pair of XPA-1Ls and will state here and now that I have never had a problem with them. IMO this is the greatest value of any Class A amp on the market, the control the amp has over the speaker is second to none as far as I'm concerned. I have gone to the make purchase bottom again for another set of these, but just can't see spending on amps when my XMC-1 my come up for sale to me.
Nick
I really do WANT these amps! I've been talked off the ledge more then a few times about them.

From my reading it seems this product had problems from the start. Except for some initial issues that were obvious out if the box - and quickly corrected - I don't believe the XPA-1Ls are any less reliable than other Emo amps. That's surprising that you're having problems 8 months in. Hopefully return shipping isn't too much.
