50TH ANNIVERSARY Meet the Beatles was released 50 years ago tomorrow. January 20, 1964. I was 11 years old. In the fall of '63 the radio was playing the likes of The Four Seasons, Jan and Dean and Bobby Vinton. Then the whole world changed!!!!!!!!!

The BEST band in the world and will be the most memorable. I was memorized the first time I seen them on the Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday night. My first Beatle album that I purchased was "HELP". I bought it the same day I seen the movie. With every album they turned another page in music history. True Genius in the music world.

What many didn't (at the time, and some still don't) know is that Capitol Records originally passed on The Beatles when their sister company EMI offered them the rights to their first album (Please Please Me). This allowed a little know company, Vee-Jay records to grab the rights and market the album in America as Introducing the Beatles. The album came to market about 10 days before the first Capitol release. By time of The Beatles second album (With The Beatles), Capital had realized the blunder and decided to market the album here in the states as Meet The Beatles. This is why The Beatles first album was not their first album here. I actually have (in storage) the original 45 with Please Please Me on it as well as an original Introducing the Beatles (kinda beat up) on LP in my album collection.

I remember the Vee-Jay release, but even though I didn't declare it so, most people think of "Meet the Beatles" as at least their first Beatles album. VJ's "Introducing the Beatles" was in short supply early on as I can imagine Capital could kick out far more volume. On an aside, Capital has finally released the CD Beatles albums in their US format. Prior to this all the Beatles CDs were in their UK format. In the old days in the UK if a song was released as a single it would NOT be on an album. This made getting the 2 "Past Master" volumes with the singles a necessity. This site lists the US Releases

Wore a couple of "Meet The Beatles" LPs out (I think my current one's in decent shape), the beginning of something we could never imagine. Many good songs on "Introducing the Beatles" too. I seem to remember that on the L.A. top 40 (probably KRLA), "I Want To Hold Your Hand" knocked "Louie, Louie" out of the number 1 position. Also remember feeling that The Beatles were a big threat to my favorite band at the time - the Beach Boys - eventually I came to accept that I could have two favorites. While the mono releases seem to be the audiophile favs, I grew up with the stereo versions and still like them best (Paul's bass being the exception).

My sister absolutely loved this album - I was much younger than her at the time (funny thing is, I still am...) and remember her playing it on a pink compact BSR player - something like this: My mother really hated them but dad had to remind her that she herself used to be a frantic Sinatra fan and so she just kinda went quiet... She put up with them until later when they started getting way too freaky for her. There were these fights over playing time on the pink thing - The Beatles or Val Doonican...Val often one, bless him. Sis moved out for a while.

You mean your mother didn't like Why Don't We Do It In The Road from the White Album?Yea that and 'Come Together'... .hell she didn't even like 'I am The Walrus' - thought they were taking the piss out of Lewis Carroll's grand work. One never mentioned the hallucinatory aspect of the Caterpillar's hookah pipe...

My dad did a bit of nail surgery on Why Don't We Do it In the Road! Pretty good aim, he only got a tiny bit of the first seconds of the next song!
The Beatles so rock!

And early next month is the 50th anniversary of their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Hard to believe its been that long! I was only 9 at that time, but even for a dumb nine year old that wasn't that much aware of music at the time, I remember feeling that THIS was something far better than anything that had come before - even I recognized that, the sound and music was just so fresh and true. The quality just oozed out of the television. Even my parents (who grew up in the 30's & 40's on big bands and Frank Sinatra, etc.) were thoroughly mesmerized (though they wouldn't admit it until much later!). In one swipe of the hand other singers (like Elvis as a prime example) was exposed for the minor talents that they really were - the contrast with The Beatles music was that stark.
Songwriting talent like the world had never seen or heard before then was immediately recognized...(sigh)...

If you haven't seen it, try to get a copy of an early Robert Zemeckis (Back to The Future, Contact, Forrest Gump, Castaway) movie called, 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'. A fun, fictional account of a bunch of teenagers trying to get in to see that one particular Ed Sullivan Show. www.amazon.com/I-Wanna-Hold-Your-Hand/dp/B00028HBJS

One thing I have to say about this 50th version is the good job Capital did with the packaging. Each disk has both the mono and stereo versions. Although I will always consider the Jewel Case the first and best package for a CD this is the best cardboard case I've seen. There is a plastic liner around the CD which prevents getting your fingers all over the CD just getting it out. Also, there is a Mylar sleeve to protect the cardboard.

This box set is not the US Capitol masters. They used the 2009 UK remasters for the albums using the US track listing. Now available... This box set is not the US Capitol masters. They used the 2009 UK remasters for the albums using the US track listing. Probably a good thing, they spent a lot of time on the 2009 releases, I like the ones I have. There are a lot of people out there who are pissed off that purchased the stereo and mono box sets, now they are about worthless.... Do you mean the 2009 box sets? They did seem pricey and it's nice the new set has both versions.
