The "silent thing" is to lower the noise floor so much that even the most subtle details, harmonics and overtones come through over it.....IIRC..... And internal balanced design gets this done. Agreed, if you are listening through headphones. Most people are listening in rooms that have a high enough noise floor that they wouldn't notice the difference between balanced and unbalanced. Personally, I buy balanced because it makes me feel better.

Spot on, if the noise floor is inaudible unbalanced then it's a waste of time, money and effort making it more inaudible with balanced/differential hardware. Cheers Gary

Not sure about this conclusion - the lower noise floor contributes to the subtle "airiness" of the sound, at least on my Maggie 1.7's.
But then, I've never done a DBT on this, nor plan to.
I like knowing I've got the best audio feeding my speakers!

I like knowing I've got the best audio feeding my speakers! I know what you mean by subtle airiness. I agree. It is VERY hard to get that right. I personally think the noise floor has reasonably little to do with it but that there's something else likely a variety of factors that help tease out all the details. For instance the DC-1, XDA-1, XDA-2 and USP-1 sounded about the same in terms of hiss but there were clear (to me) differences in how they managed to present that subtle detail that makes the difference between a like-real sound and a recording.

I just noticed on the XSP-1 Gen 2 page Emotiva must be happy that the first shipment sold out so fast, marketing via Lonnie video is a winner, well done Andrew Cheers Gary

Absolutely. They need to do it for every product. Andrew knows how to present stuff. Also somehow the way he lit up the circuits on the products was I thought rather inspired. He managed to make it interesting in the video and I haven't seen that approach before showing the real microscopic innards like the regulation for the power supplies in the ERC-3 etc. He made a circuit board interesting and commercially motivating! Who can boast that?!
