Hi guys, Im over in oz and have heard quite alot about these amps and know that a few are being used here down under. My question is what do you guys use for your subs? Do you leave it plugged in to your avr and drive the other speakers with the amps. Im thinking of the xpa-5 to drive the front 3 and the 2 rears leaving the suby in the avr. At present we have got a denon 3312 which is nice however we are building and the lounge/theater room will be filled with a yamaha 3030 which from memory has good wattage.

wil5o71 Welcome to the Emotiva Lounge. We've got a lot of Mates from Down Under hang out here.
If I understand your question correctly, most folks use powered subs. They of course have their own internal amps and are connected directly to an AVR receiver or HT pre-pro sub line out. The XPA-5 which I own is connected to the AVR or pre-pro from the 5 channel pre outs.
Please feel free to ask any and all questions you might have. Many of us in the States buy from online direct firms like Emotiva that sell subs (Emo is out of subs now). Many of these subs for HT and music are large and heavy so I don't know if our Aussie friends have a better local source. Some of the best here are SVS, Power Sound Audio, Rythmik, HSU Research and Outlaw Audio.
Many here, instead of an AVR receiver with the wasted amps, prefer a power amp like the XPA-5 and a separate pre-pro like the Emotiva UMC-200 or the soon to be released XMC-1. Don't confuse the power amps in the AVR receivers with a massive 73lb (33kg) brute like the XPA-5 with 300 watts into 4 ohms per channel with all channel operating simultaneously. All Emo products have a 5 yr transferable warranty.

Hey wil5o71..Welcome.. I started with an avr used to process the signal and power my speakers Onkyo 818. ..Sounded ok.. I still use the avr to process but added a power amp using the pre- outs which both your receivers have.. Definitely a step up ...I bought the amp through Emotiva website..Couldn't be more pleased ...They make great products.. I'm using two powered subs that connect through my avr.... Have fun with your search... Your in the right place..

Yes people use internally powered subs most of the time and connect it to an AVR or a pre-processor. If you are buying the XPA-5, I would reccomend not buying an AVR and buying a standalone processor which doesn't have amps like an AVR has inside. Like the UMC-200, or better yet the upcoming Emotiva XMC-1 which will have robust room corection and good sound quality from its DAC chips and analog circuits. This way you are spending more on the sound quality and zero on redundant amplifiers (you already will have an XPA-5). I think your quality of sound will increase (for less money than what you are planning on spending). I also think Emotiva is working on a seven channel amplifier if five channels aren't enough. What kind of speakers do you plan to use if you don't mind me asking? And what kind of sources are you using for your music?

Just for fun, here's a discussion about passive subs vs powered subs, and possibly using Emotiva amplifiers for sub use.

I and welcome to the NUT house! Glad to have you join the Family! You say about the Yamaha 3030 , wattage is from memory? do you own it yet? I'm interested because I have the 3020. I could not wait and did not know about the upcomeing XMC-1. I really like my Yamaha and it provides all the bell and whistles that I like. I do augment the power with external amps but I am running a 11.4 HT system. What do you plan for speakers? 7.2 ? 9.2? or what? More info to us the better. Room size, acoustic treatment, etc.
Peace,
Nick

hi guys. Thanks for the welcome. Im using a 210w sherwood powered sub which is still giving out good base for a sub that I bought about 10 years ago, I have a 5.1 at the moment, welling speakers of the same age 8ohms which still work well. The room that these will be going into will be about 4meters in depth and 6 or so in length and walls insulated. So the room will not be huge but big enough. the main object of this room will be to watch movies and shows on our new pany 65 inch vt. I may go more than the 5.1 and use the 3 zones the yamy can do, I.e zone 2 the the outside patio where another plasma will be. Here we will have cieling speakers in. The denon will be in the rumpas room powering new paradigm ceiling speakers and powered sub. Not sure what to do yet. Novis, i think 150w driven 8ohms. in all 11.2 channel. I haven't really worried about only using 2 ch stereo for music but that could change as I have more time to actually sit down and really get into my music. I generally if I listen to music is stream via net radio or through itunes. I'm more of a movie person than sitting back and relaxing with music. I will take another look at other alternatives. what would u guys suggest regarding pre/pro or configuration?

Hey, the Yammy will drive all of what you want but for 2 channel I have gone to the XSP-1 and then to a set of amps, then to my speakers.for streaming I go through the DC-1 but you don't need to spend all that money for great sound from the Yamaha.. The Burr-Brown DAC in my Yamaha sound really nice but I think the 3030 has a Cirus DAC More later. Do you have the 3030?

Your AVR provides the audio signal to your powered sub and it will stay in that configuration. The amps are used to power speakers that do not have their own amps.
So your plan on using the XPA-5 for your fronts, center and rear surrounds is spot on.

Wait about two months or so. XMC-1 XPA-5 UPA-500 for the cieling speakers. You're electronic performance will be really good. However remember most of your money should go for speakers rather than electronics. No point driving $300 speakers with a $2000 processor IMO.

okay another question which may be more relevant on the pre/pro threads, I have just noticed that the xmc1, umc200 have unbalanced rca type plugs, that would mean that my speaker wire would have to have these type connectors soldered onto the ends to accommodate? I know the amps still have post type connectors on the rear which can either be used with banana plugs or winding the spindles onto the wire. These welling speakers I have are over 10 yrs old however they still throw out some good sound. the front l/r you can use banana but the centre and rears are spring loaded type fittings where the wires go into and get held into place.

You are really confusing some things... The UMC and XMC are PREAMPS - you can´t connect passive speakers to them! You connect the mentioned PRE via XLR or CINCH with an amplifier, then you connect your passive speakers to the amp with bare speaker wire or banana plugs - whatever works.

There are no speaker connections on the UMC/XMC. None.
