OK - good news. The Bowers & Wilkins DM-630 speakers initially had no response from either woofer. On closer inspection, the problem was that one of the speaker terminal posts was unscrewed and loose so that the jumpers were not making connection. I tightened the jumpers, and both speakers now work perfectly and sound good. Nice tonal balance and imaging!
Good news No. 2 - I cleaned up the wiring behind the equipment rack yesterday, and now everything works with NO HUM! I'm back to running with a remotely-controlled passive volume pot and it's sounding very good! Anyone want to buy a spare preamplifier?
Good news No. 3 - The gluten-free chicken and sausage gumbo I cooked today came out very good.
Contemplation for tomorrow - I'm thinking of bi-amplifying my speakers by trying the 12-watt Heathkit tube amplifiers for the treble and the Emotiva PA-1 amps for the bass. Could be a "best of both worlds" or else a "not ever again." Tomorrow will tell...

One of the best setups I've stumbled across yet: I’ve got some DM-610’s that I’ve been using for 25 years. Wonderful speakers fer sure. That’s a nice setup you have there.

One of the best setups I've stumbled across yet: What happened to the “small footprint” boomzilla I once knew? 😲

What happened to the “small footprint” boomzilla I once knew? 😲 This isn't the computer room system - just the main one.

What happened to the “small footprint” boomzilla I once knew? 😲 This isn't the computer room system - just the main one. That I know, but I remember a boomzilla that wanted simple and small, ha,,,,ha,,,,,! It appears anything but that atm my friend. I’ve been enjoying the progress. Enjoy! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

...I remember a boomzilla that wanted simple and small, ha,,,,ha,,,,,! It appears anything but that atm my friend. I’ve been enjoying the progress. Enjoy! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 I'd STILL like "simple & small," but I want high performance more. I could settle for an integrated amplifier with a built-in DAC and a pair of speakers with no sub, but it would sound NOTHING like what I'm getting from the current rig. Oh well...

Our B'zilla oscillates between tolerating bulk for good sound and going compact. I think those BW's look glorious next to the subs.

Even the wife (whose usual comment is "it all sounds the same to me") commented on the sound of the B&W / S15 combo. While I was enjoying some vintage Kraftwerk, she came by and commented "That has really powerful bass!" Of course, at the time, I did have the subwoofers dialed up to " garbulky level," but yes, the bass was tight, tuneful, and very powerful. And even at that level, these ancient B&Ws were holding their own. I had to skip the bi-amplification experiment with tube treble and solid-state bass. There were too many impediments including: The gain of the 12-watt Heathkits and the Emotiva PA-1s were radically different, and I didn't have a spare volume pot on hand. The input impedance of the Heathkits and the PA-1s was different enough (300,000 Ohms and 22,000 Ohms, respectively) that the upstream crossover would have had significant mismatches in crossover frequencies (NOTE: The high-pass filter of the crossover is passive, and designed for about 17,000 Ohms). I could have overcome this by modifying the crossover, but I'd have needed to take it apart again and modified either the resistance and/or capacitance in the high-pass section. I also think that the "dual Emotiva T2 experiment" is nearing its conclusion. The primary configuration that I was interested in (stacked towers) did not work well. The midrange drivers were maybe too far from one another and the combination of the two tweeters sounded sibilent. The outward facing "effects" setup worked OK, but I think I'm getting equal quality sound from using single speakers (to date, both the KEF iQ10 speakers and the B&W DM630 speakers have sounded spectacular with the subs in use).

I'm about settled on my next speaker pair: Also, my audio amigo has come up with some innovative (and inexpensive) sound absorbers: His experience is that the "flocked surface" air filters seem more effective than the non flocked ones. He prefers the 2" thick filters rather than the 1" thick ones. He also finds some 4" thick air filters to be helpful. YMMV, and also, obviously, my audio amigo is not married and thus has no concerns about WAF.

Very interesting approach to pure function. I'm curious how the cylinders are constructed. Cardboard shipping tubes covered in some absorbent material?
