I took my Apple TV-3 to the local Apple Store to see if they could exorcize its demons and restore it to a working Roon destination. In a word - no. The Apple kid I spoke with, despite being polite and at least slightly sympathetic, told me: 1. The Apple TV-3 is now an obsolete product. 2. The Apple Store no longer has diagnostic tools for the device. 3. I could buy an Apple TV-4? (actually, no; the version four lacks the optical TOSLINK output that allows the device to act as an audio streamer) 4. Other than the TV-4, there was nothing in their store that even came close to the function I wanted. (Probably true) So, I looked about (figuratively) for other inexpensive stopgap measures that might carry me through until this summer when the new Roon Nucleus is supposed to ship. The cheapest option I found was the Dayton Audio streamer ($69 with free shipping). BUT - Before I do that, three other options occur to me: * The Apple TV-3 that I already own HAS, previously, not only been recognized by Roon as a destination but also was reliable until I started messing with it by trying to enable its video streaming features. The local Baton Rouge MacIntosh Users’ Group meets this Thursday at a local library. Maybe someone there can help me troubleshoot. * If we meet with no success there, I might be able to find an inexpensive DVD or Blu-Ray player with an Ethernet (or WiFi) input and a digital audio out. * If neither of the above results in successful Roon streaming, then Roon might be kind enough to let me cancel my order of their Nucleus One ($500), and instead purchase a discontinued Nucleus + ( if they have any left). I have asked & will report what they say… www.amazon.com/Extractor-Splitter-Converter-Adapter-Support/dp/B06XW7HYBP/ref=sr_1_2?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.DZmOCQVT7OrD7A12S-4_YLy-3p1T9V8VQsW8OMRRJP5cEQi9V1Xmkgh1NyXZNTvSgfp_juCFy6Ll6gffEYoP-As6IkZKXkcTriwJrGfz1xKmaOkNh3D6_y7ioLp_SB63Cvauk3Iyucju_KEcFvQg4nAgIo9S4Duat8lmLW6IdTwCpP_0FNsebGAAxsZi9bFeLOZMeLHbkphz5tvb4jSD5WL4Wvm-omrFNV-f39799ykDfm78Tr1hMdLo9aO6lLNNcgEsauuLxOyWI2cSqSubY5wuxcHzIk-pC9o8bt1S_jc.rR0_rF3LDSPQ0L5JvsEL-smXxGa2BGc9bsVgdf0hNaA&dib_tag=se&keywords=hdmi+to+toslink+adapter&qid=1713267510&refinements=p_72%3A1248879011&rnid=1248877011&s=electronics&sr=1-2There are a bunch more on Amazon.....

Maybe... I've worked all morning on this & apparently, from internet searches, I'm NOT the only one having this issue.
I completely disconnected the ATV from the internet, disconnected the Samsung TV from the internet, and then reset the ATV. It DID prompt me to enter my Apple ID & password, so it should think that it's mine now (and not the previous owner's). But that didn't persuade Roon to see the ATV... I may try to use HDMI with ARC, but that seems REALLY convoluted. OTOH, if it works...

The price is certainly right, but it says NOTHING about Roon compatibility.

The price is certainly right, but it says NOTHING about Roon compatibility. Yeah...I highly doubt Roon would be mentioned with any of these products. How many non audiophiles use Roon, or have even heard of it? Cheap enough to try though...

I tried to call Roon this morning to cancel my Roon one order and to ask if they had any other Nucleus products in stock that they could ship NOW. No dice.
Roon does not list any telephone numbers on their website, and if you find one on the web, it’s constantly busy. So, instead, I emailed them with my question.
Irritating. Either they’ll have some discontinued Nucleus models in my price range or they won’t. If the latter case, I’ll order a NUC and build my own.
Oh well…

Telephone numbers for 'various' agencies?
I've found they won't put their phone back 'on the hook' unless the are expecting a call.......
other than THAT? use a ham radio or smoke signals......

I think I’m ready to shoot flaming arrows through their windows with messages tied onto them. Enough! If they don’t want to sell me a Nucleus (and apparently they don’t) then I’m off to shop NUCs.

Unless I hear back from Roon, the research I've done indicates that maybe the cheapest stop-gap measure I can use until my Nucleus One 360 arrives in June may be a used NUC. I can buy one for less than the price of a Parts Express streamer ($70 delivered), and can resell it for what I paid later on.
Since Roon's latest upgrade, my Apple TV-3 will no longer be recognized by Roon as a destination. Tough-titty. The internet "fixes" to restore streamer function have not been successful, and my time is worth more than what I paid for the Apple TV anyway ($10).
Since the Nucleus will eventually take over the Roon duties, I'm not motivated to spend a penny more than I have to. Are there any options I've overlooked?
I can pick up a used NUC for about $50 delivered. I have external HDDs to hold the library. I have internal SSDs to hold the Roon Rootkit.

My conclusions so far are that the 2.0 upgrade to Roon software just doesn't like the Apple TV as a destination. My game plan from here (to avoid spending any more money):
1. Disconnect Ethernet from the Apple TV (ATV) & force it to communicate via WiFi. If Roon still won't recognize it:
2. Install JRiver Media Center for Mac - will that see the ATV?
3. If jRiver can't see the ATV, try other free music players for Mac. If they don't work, then:
4. Listen to music on my Apple 27" Cinema Display until the Roon Nucleus arrives in June.

It does not excel with metadata like Roon, it does not have the ARC function provided by Roon and it does not offer an imbedded version of HQPlayer, for those who enjoy steep learning curves, but it is inexpensive and sounds better than Roon, unless you use the aforementioned HQPlayer. Audirvana usually has a free trial.

How new is your AppleTV? There are LOTS of different versions of the AppleTV... Maybe a newer one would work better... It looks like trying to get Roon to work with an AppleTV is... err... complicated. community.roonlabs.com/t/what-s-the-point-of-apple-tv-as-roon-endpoint/229989Unless I hear back from Roon, the research I've done indicates that maybe the cheapest stop-gap measure I can use until my Nucleus One 360 arrives in June may be a used NUC. I've given up on persuading the latest Roon version to play to my Apple TV-3. I installed JRiver Media Center, and it can't see the Apple TV either. I've now opened Apple Music app and (one would think) that IT, at least, should recognize the Apple TV as a destination. We'll see...

I agree... that's why I don't use Apple stuff... and Windows isn't quite as bad as Apple in that regard... at least yet... (although, at the rate they're going, it may get there soon). In this case it kind of sounds like Apple's "Roon Ready" option on the AppleTV is just broken... Or Roon has changed something in their latest firmware and Apple hasn't updated their firmware to work with it yet... (And, unfortunately, both Apple and Roon are proprietary systems.) This proprietary crap makes me want to scream. Trying to force me into some 'ecosystem' is just another word for evil......

Immediate solution (maybe) is to use the Apple Music app & see if it can stream to the Apple TV. Long term solution is to add the Roon Nucleus to the system & stream directly from there.

I have ordered the Roon Nucleus One (being delivered in June - maybe…). Once installed, the Roon Nucleus One (henceforth “RNO”) can reside in my living room audio shelves, eliminating the need for my Mac mini to be entangled with the audio system at all. In fact, I believe that the RNO can even host its own WiFi network. This would give my iPad with Roon Remote on it a stronger signal by getting the computer room WiFi router/wireless hub out of the middle. The living room system can still get internet access through Ethernet (connected to the Mac mini’s wireless router/hub) & to the
This rig will also allow me to connect a center channel speaker and surround speakers for movies. I’ll, further, have access to bass management, electronic room correction, and tone controls. The Arcam 300 AVR (an oldie but a goody) sounds sweet with my Klipsch RP-600m speakers.

A “Green Room aside” here - I saw the doctor this week for my best routine six-month checkup ever:
I’ve lost more than 20 pounds & dropped two waist sizes. My total cholesterol is down with good cholesterol up and bad cholesterol way down Triglycerides are way down A1C is now below seven All other metrics are within range Doctor told me to discontinue two of my medications and to keep up whatever I’m doing
My goals are to drop an additional 20 pounds, to get my blood uric acid down to 5.0 mg/dL, and to maintain my blood sugar at 100 or less via diet. There’s no motivator like pain to promote change; I’ve just had all I want of gout attacks!

My Apple TV is a third generation. The only newer ones are generation four. But the Apple TV-4 models will NOT work as audio streamers (at least not conveniently) because their ONLY output is HDMI. So unless your DAC has a HDMI input (mine doesn’t), your only choice would be to feed your TV and then use the Audio Return Channel (ARC) to get the content. I’ve had it fighting with this! I’ll just listen to audio on my Apple Cinema Display (or on headphones) until my Roon Nucleus arrives.

I'll just pop in and remind everyone that our new streamer really is getting closer... (I would say "summer"). And a little birdie tells me that it almost certainly will be Roon Ready...
