Just curious how people use their gear. Do you power everything down when not in use or leave it on? I leave my UPA-500 and UMC-200 on (not standby) all the time, unless I'm gone for more than a few days. My thinking is that it's better to avoid warming up and cooling down the components to prevent the solder joints from breaking. Back in the day I found my old Marantz 500 power amp actually sounded better having been on for at least 24 hours, though I haven't noticed this with the Emotiva. What do most people do?

UMC-1/XPA-5/Ultra Sub 12 on 24/7, not standby. Other equipment on/standby as needed/used. Changes only if not to used for more than a day or two.

I turn mine off, to stand by, for if I didn't my cave would be very hot with my XPR-1s cooking.
Peace,
Nick

If I'm going to use them within the next eight to twelve hours, I'll leave them on. If I'm going to be gone for a day or more, I turn them off.

I turn mine off completely, unplug it and put it in the garage when I'm not using it. Thats the cheapest way. No electricity at all used....

ok, on a more serious note, i turn my gear off, if i don't use it within a couple of hrs again. reasons here are a) the insanely high cost of power in jamaica... and b) the constant very high danger of brownouts, spikes, lightning etc., even with pretty serious power protection equipment at work, i try to minimize a risk many of you luckily don't have to worry about much. only exception is my unraid media server, since it serves the whole house, me at work or on the road + a few friends around the world.
cheers, L

I put everything into Standby if one or more criteria are met:
- It's the end of the day and I'm going to sleep. - I'm leaving the house and no one else is home.
I unplug everything if one or more criteria are met:
- I'm going away for more than 3 days. - There's a thunderstorm rolling in (a daily occurrence here in FL during summertime).

I leave them on. I find it sounds better that way for me. Usually takes about a day or two and the difference is subtle but noticeable. For me it has to do with the immersion. At the start it feels like it's a recording playing through speakers and then later it feels like there's depth and immersive effect. I couldn't explain why.

Everything goes on standby, but I always turn them back on one+ hour before any critical listening sessions.

Always on standby unless I know I will be doing some listening or watching a movie later in the day. The only time I shut everything down via circuit breaker since I have a dedicated room is when I am away whether it be just an overnight stay or a week.

Interesting. I am surprised that the results are so lopsided. Maybe I'll start turning off my gear.
I'll still always leave new electronics running continuously during the return period to give them every chance to fail.

At the start it feels like it's a recording playing through speakers and then later it feels like there's depth and immersive effect. I couldn't explain why. i am not trying to talk you out of it (would be stupid, only thing worse is trying to talk your wife out of anything). but! do you really think it takes a day or two for your equipment to get back to the 'same sound'? it just doesn't make sense to me. i have to admit, i never noticed any improvement after a 'shortish' (1hr max) warm up period. keep in mind, i talk about non-tube equipment here (but even for tubes). there is a warmup period, agreed. for non-tube gear it should be within the hr, more often less time. even for tubes, an hr should be sufficent to 'heat up' the tube environment. i can agree with a certain amount of 'burn-in' time for equipment (beside cables) initially and the 'warm up' for 'units'. but a day or two sounds outlandish to me. maybe your room is airconditioned to freezing and everything has slowly get back to 'room temperature'? but anyway, in a less hostile power supply environment i would leave my stuff on. simply based on the thought that less cycles of power on/ off - gear cooling/ heating would most likely extend the lifespan. cheers, L
