well folks, I just took receipt of two UPA-1 amplifiers from craigslist. the XPA-1L G2 amps did not work out for me. I think what happened is that when I got my new XPA-1L amps, I was busy noticing the better mids and treble and just assumed that when the bass filled in that it would be about the same or better than the UPA-1's. the bass on the XPA-1L's does not seem to be as strong as that of the UPA-1's, so that's why i went back to the UPA-1's.

Mine as well. Seeing these sell for $450/pr on the used market is without question the undisputed mono block performance-to-value king.

Do not feel bad that the 1L did not work for you. I had both an xpa-2 and the 1L and decided to keep the xpa-2. I preferred the more up front sound of the 2 to the laid back sound of the 1L.

Mine have been going strong for years now. Used everyday, everytime the TV is on.

I've owned four of these amps before and I don't see a need for anything else unless you going with tube amplification or integrated which it was my case.

so, i hooked up the XPA-1L's last nite just "because". the bass is still not as strong as that of the UPA-1's, but it is not as big of a difference that i remembered. now, it is difficult for me to say which amp of the the two is more accurate, or weather the bass on the UPA-1's is over-emphasized or weather the bass on the XPA-1L's is de-emphasized. the XPA-1L's do have a very smooth sound, though. both the UPA-1 and XPA-1L are nice amps. i'm still glad i got the UPA-1 amps back. anyone is not going to know how they sound until they hear either one in THEIR system and in THEIR room. cheers!

I read your original review and thought back then that maybe the XPA-1L's were bass deficient. After having had them in my system for testing and servicing a few times recently, I decided to try a bass test. As well as the XPA-1L's I have access to an XPA-2, an XPA-3, an XPA-5 and an XPA-100 which is supposedly very close to a UPA-1 in spec. Basically what I do is to set up test tones at relevant frequencies, set the pre amp volume to a specific SPL (75 db in this case) and then cycle though the power amps. I selected test tones at, 50 hz and 70 hz, (played through my sub) plus 90 hz, 110 hz, 150 hz and 300 hz (played through my FL & FR). I figured that would give me a reasonable representation of the bass profile of each power amp. Honestly there's not a lot of difference, not that my SPL metre could determine anyway I also had a try with a non calibrated mic on my iPad using the JL Audio app with similar results.
I think I can safely say that of the 3 x XPA-1L's that I tried, none of them were bass deficient in comparison to any other XPA amp on my list. So my guess is that what you were experiencing wasn't a lack of bass from the XPA-1L's but their superior mid range and high frequency clarity, particularly in Class A.
As a result of the testing and a lot of listening, I'm so confident in their performance that there's XPA-1L's on their way to me right now.
Cheers Gary

i just private messaged with someone and they explained why it is that i am perceiving the XPA-1L's sound the way i do. i am now good with the superior imaging of the XPA-1L's, the bass part of the spectrum included. if i was anyone out there looking to buy these i would not hesitate to do so. look at my signature, I'm using them now.

Are you selling the UPA-1's ?, I could be looking for a pair if my Stealth 6 speakers sell.

i'm keeping the UPA-1's. my signature is subject to change without notice as both the UPA-1 and XPA-1L have their own strengths.
