Here's another option if the OP doesn't want to deal with a NAS and wants decent transfer speeds.
AMS Venus DS3R Pro2 ... $70 at Newegg.

I already have a Synology NAS but use these for portable storage. Two of them plus my SilverStone SG05 fit nicely in my SilverStone duffel bag. Each of the AMS enclosures house two 3TB WD Red drives and format to about 5.8 TB in RAID 0. They connect to a PC using either eSATA or USB3, but not both active at the same time. I get no less than about 70MB/s and no more than 150MB/s when copying/moving BD rips ( 15GB to 70GB file sizes ) between the two enclosures or from local storage to these enclosures. I move the completed rips over to the Synology for permanent storage. The transfer is steady at about 140-150 MB/s, so that is probably the max for the Red drives in the AMS enclosures.
I like them because they are small and relatively cheap compared to a real NAS, which isn't that portable. The Emotiva DC-1 sits nicely on two AMS enclosures side-by-side and will fit well on top of a typical tower PC case, which is usually 8" wide. There are some negative reviews about build quality on Newegg, but the only issue I had with mine is the locking mechanism not staying locked. I took a micro heat pen and heated up the plastic latch just enough to bend it up a little bit so it will take much more pressure to unlock the latch. The drives AREN'T going to come out or un-mount if the latch isn't fully locked. The lever has to be pulled down in order to actually release the drive. I'd like AMS to go back to the metal locking mechanism on their older enclosures or at least offer a caddy upgrade on these.
The transfer speed will probably be highly dependent on the host computer they are connected. The SG05 houses an Intel 4770K ( Haswell -- 4th Gen Core i7 ) and 16 GB DDR3-1866 RAM. Speed has remained constant with the various USB 3 Win 7 drivers up to, and including version 2.5.3.34.
