Now that the ski season is over I seem to have time to work on things that I've been putting off, like making that Emotiva processor comparison table I've always wanted! Actually I noticed several comments from those trying to decide if they'd upgrade their UMC-1 or UMC-200 to the XMC-1, and what the differences were. Right after EmoFest 2012 when the 200 was announced some threads were started regarding the differences, so I thought I'd try to document the features the best I could. I chose a spreadsheet for convenience on my iPad, but I'm still working on the translation to posting a forum pic, hopefully there's enough resolution for you to expand and read. This is just a first pass and it's far from complete. If people are interested I'll update it as more information is learned, and I welcome information and corrections. I would like to keep this as factual as possible, if something is strongly expected I'll include it with a question mark, otherwise just a ?? I'm also happy to add more items or make other reasonable changes. Obviously this isn't going to answer how the unit sounds or when it will ship, there are other threads to speculate about that. But if someone is knowledgeable about the advantages of say a particular DAC chipset then that would be helpful discussion. Hopefully you get the drift ... 'just the facts mam'. The notes or similar lines can handle more descriptive information. If no one's interested I'll just fill in what I can and leave it be, but I look forward to any help making this as complete and useful as possible. - Bruce With that here's what I have so far (the current version will always be here) ...

I recommend to add the following line item:
Availability XMC-1: Possibly somewhere in the future UMC-200: Now UMC-1: Discontinued

The UMC-200 also uses 0.5 ohm step resistor ladder volume control.

Nice comparison chart. Now only time will tell if there is a significant increase in audio performance over the UMC-1/UMC-200. I am very much looking forward to these comparisons.

This is a great idea and job well done. I use a similar tool whenever I plan a major purchase. My only suggestion would be to add the same info on the Sherbourn PT-7030 since many of us are owners and will be considering the upgrade to the XMC-1. In fact I have both UMC-1 and PT-7030. I hate to add more work for you, but if others are interested, it would be appreciated.
Cheers!
Chuck

Where did the chart go?

I uploaded a new copy to Photobucket and relinked it, I still see it, don't you? Edit - Ah, I see it in the browser (Safari), but not in the ProBoards app ... Hmmm Edit2 - Think I fixed it, bad link and the server or browser had it cached. Working?

Does anyone have links to a product page or manual? Pics of the front and back don't hurt either.

Nice chart! One other thing to add in would be how many directly selectable & configurable inputs are there. The UMC-1 has several (16 if memory serves me correct...or is that 12?). The UMC-200 only has 5 or 6. This can make setup with a universal remote a bit more challenging if one has a lot of sources. I find the UMC-1 far better in this regard. The XMC...we don't know, but I heard it may be 14 (I hope it does!)

If someone with a UMC-200 could confirm the exact number there I'd appreciate it. Thanks cwt and repeetavx for the info on the PT-7030, I'll get started on that later today. Seems like PhotoBucket is reducing the resolution of my chart, even if I check the original resolution box. It looks much better on the iPad before I upload it there. - Bruce

Ok, I made the first pass on the PT-7030 column, also added a couple other suggested lines. Still welcoming missing information, fact checking, and/or other suggestions.

Thanks for adding the PT-7030. Now it feels like the comparison is complete.
Here's some added info on the 7030 DACS from the 7030 thread:
Post by intgenx on Dec 11, 2013 at 4:10am
I got a reply from Keith @ Emotiva... clarifying that the DACs are Burr Brown DSD1791, the output is fully balanced and is comparable to any other competitor...
I've asked for clarification on whether there are 4 DAC chips because the DSD1791 is a stereo DAC... its not clear which topology of balancing is used.
Post by intgenx on Dec 12, 2013 at 6:29am
cwt - thanks for that thread... yes... DSD processing and pureDirect would've been nice...
and they did clarify that it has 4 DAC chips - but I'm still not 100% certain on the balancing...
Also, the 7030 has no headphone jack. I see that cell was left blank on your spreadsheet. And there is no Automatic Room Correction capability. It has twin Cirrus processors and is 4RU high.
That's about all I can add at this point. Thanks again for a very useful tool.
Cheers!

Just to clarify the intertwined quotes from lonnie Bruce this is the pdf of the main cirrus logic processor in the umc200 the CS497024 ; www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proDatasheet/CS4970x4_F1.pdfIts pretty long so this is a more general idea of the family ; less the thx ultra 2 reference www.cirrus.com/en/products/cs4970xx_family.html

No processor as complex as the ones above use a standard potmeter. If the UMC-1 uses a digitally controlled analog resistor ladder or a digital control I don't know however.

More updates this weekend and today, fewer blank cells. Found some discrepancies on the 7030, like one review says no Dolby EX, another says yes. I added a couple lines like video processor, still unsure on a couple volume controls and whether the .5 dB is for balance accuracy as well. If you have any of these processors please check your column for accuracy and for anything missing that would make for a better comparison. Thanks to Chuck, cwt, Mark and others for links, info and help. - Bruce Thanks for adding the PT-7030. Now it feels like the comparison is complete. ... Chuck
