Just kidding, mostly, it certainly can sound wonderful, but it is more accurate to think of it as standard res, is it not?

Agreed. I have some lovely sounding cds! I just got Colin Blunstone's One Year which has some nice Brit-psych-pop tracks and some killer string quartet backed pop. The recording is very nice, not reference quality, but really great sounding. And my "high res" copy of Bat Out Of Hell sounds flat and plastic. I do not think I have the vinyl to compare, but it was produced by Todd Rundgren, a certified genius, but he could compress the joy out of his recordings at times.
