Hi,
Few weeks ago I took delivery of XPA-2 gen 2. I liked them so much that I ordered XPA-3 and UMC-200 which I expect delivery tomorrow. Unfortunately, over the weekend I noticed my Left Magnepan 1.6/QR speaker was making a buzzing sound with certain music.
So I'm about to order new Magnepan 1.7 but was wondering if you guys recommend wood or aluminum trim and classic or knit cloth?
Thanks.

If you are handy, you might try to fix the 1.6s you have.
It's probably wires coming unglued.
As for style, you prob want to post a pic of your room

The answer to your question is really one of personal preference on style. I really like the aluminum trim with the black socks. They look modern and classy. I didn't like the wood trim and I don't like the heavy looking fabric (esp. the lighter white-ish color). But, if that's all they had, I would buy them for the sound.
As greenkiwi notes, you may be able to easily fix your 1.6's, but if not...the 1.7's are quite nice.

I too would suggest re laminating your 1.6's. I recently re laminated my 27 year old Maggies and I am the least handy handyman I have ever met. It was pretty easy, and you won't even have a ribbon tweeter to mess with.
All the instructions are easily found on line. Tip use Weldwood Dap as the glue.

A few things about the aluminum. First it is pressed particle board with an aluminum wrap. This matters mainly because my buddy took delivery of his 3.7's w/alum and we discovered that all the screws had been stripped out if the back due to shipping damage. Yes this could have happened with wood but the wood does seem to be a lot more robust. His replacement pair he changed to wood and they arrived fine.

My own pref is black with cherry =P
I don't think the al issue is as big with the 1.7s, as it is just small trim down the sides, no big slabs on the front.
Hmm. Kraemer designs could do something insane with the 3.7s

Magnepan will also do the repair if you like the 1.6 I have a pair of mg2b that were done at magnepan in the mid 90's and still sound good.

Although I'm as handy as Merlin Monroe is ugly because of your suggestions I attempted the repair last night. I'm waiting 24 hrs for the glue to dry so I'll let you know how it went tonight. Cross your fingers.

Send your 1.6s (fixed or not) to Magnestand along with the $2000 saved by not buying the 1.7s. They'll come back looking and sounding much, much better than the 1.7s IMO. www.indiespinzone.com/magnestand.htmlRuss

Cross your fingers. Hope you're repair went well. Most peoples repairs turn out well. That said, you can also send them back to Magnepan for a factory overhaul. I sent my 1.6's in 3 or 4 years ago, It seems I spent about $550 including return shipping. For this I got two completely rebuilt drivers, a couple new caps replaced that were bad, brand new socks, and new cherry side trim. I also received the receipt for this work from Magnepan. This was perhaps the most valuable part of the transaction. That piece of paper enabled me to sell them for $800 more than I paid.

Hi,
Repairs went well. I cannot hear any buzzing anymore. The issue was not that of delamination but of loose mylar. Everything else looked good as I always took really good care of them on temperature and humidity controlled room. Fix was easy enough. I had to peel out the metal frame that held the mylar on the top left corner where the issue was. I then peeled off the mylar after apply little heat with blow dryer. I then stretched the mylar and put DAP under it and had my friend apply DAP on top of mylar where the metal frame would go on top of making a sandwich. We then put a c-clamp on the metal frame overnight.
I took some photos of the repair too as there was very little on net about mylar stretching/repair.
Anyway since I have new Emotiva gear I'm really thinking of selling the 1.6 for cheap regardless so I can get partial funds for 1.7. Obviously I'll give full disclosure to buyer that I repaired the left speaker myself and let them hear it but it turned out I've had them for 16 years and I figure it's time for a change anyway.
I think I'll go with aluminum trim on black classic cloth.
