the blue light on the front panel comes on and front right and right surround work fine as does the center (although it has a slight hiss it never had before)
the left front and left surround are dead.
i tried new cables from the amp to the preamp, no difference. i use a pioneer elite receiver as the preamp. when hooking directly up to the receiver, the left channel works fine.
i did just move and had the amp in the original packaging when i moved.
i was so excited to get my home theatre set up and the evening ended in dissappointment.
i have had the amp a few years and it has performed flawlessly
any advice?
i would guess there are some fuses, and i will look at them tomorrow, but curious that both the left channels are dead.
thanks
tom

Are you still under warranty? If so, just call them and open up a ticket.

i called in and talked to nick. he said just what you guys said. while moving i had unknowingly bumped those switches for the two left channgels to unbalanced. i switched them back and walla, it worked. the center channel hiss was from the cables being too close to power cables.
easy fixes and i am glad that was it and willing to say i caused it all myself.
thanks

Turns out I had one channel switched to balanced. lol. Doesn't it feel so good to know you don't have to RMA your product? Love it.

Accidentally moving these switches is the #1 cause of "dead" channels. With amps that have such a switch, it should always be #1 thing to check, esp. if the amp has been moved and/or if cables were swapped. Not that this has ever happened to me (more than 3 times...). Mark

All of these problems are happening to me now, however, these fixes have not fixed my XPA5.
What's worse, my amp actually shuts down right after starting.
1. I love this amp and I love Emotiva 2. But from the very beginning (February 2010), I've had red lights beneath my 5 blue lights 3. For the past year, the 5th red light was brighter than the rest 4. When the UMC was plugged in, the RS had no sound 5. When I plugged in the XMC tonight for the first time, the LS had no sound 6. I switched the #4 and #5 RCA cable; the LS had sound and the RS had no sound 7. I switched them back, but the amp flashed blue and light blue and then shut down 8. I switched out an RCA cable for #5, no change 9. I unplugged all RCA cables and re-applied them one by one, verifying that all were correct; the amp still shut down and now I have no sound 10. Throughout this process, I checked the bal/unbal switch 3x; no difference; amp starts up, flashes blue and light blue, then shuts off
Any ideas?
-Jason

Have you contacted Emotiva tech support?

^Jason, with the amp shut down, unplug all cables. No RCA or XLR cables should be connected. The only "cable" connected should be the power cable. Now switch on the amp. Does it shut down? Any red lights?

I've never understood why people just don't call Emotiva when their amps break.... Because it was 11pm and I hoped to get a response before today's business hours.

Any red lights? My wife is competent enough to do this while I'm at work. I'll report back or edit this reply when task complete.

Any red lights? OK, wife just reported back. The XPA-5 does NOT shut down. It stays on. So, I've got cable problems? (I'm using Emo cables...)

Could be cable troubles or something else internal. I would try connecting one cable at a time between cold boots. Or you could do a binary chop.. try L & R cables. If that works, add center. Then add surround cables. See if at any point you start to see trouble. If it's cable-related, try swapping that cable with one that worked in earlier tries. If OTOH it's something internal, it'll be consistently reproducible and you can seek help from Emotiva with this knowledge in hand.

Wife reports that, with all plugs removed, the amp turns on and does not shut down. However, the blue and red lights remained, as did the 5th red light being brighter than the other four. You can see my contextual photo and issue with this from 2010 here. Sorry to thread jack, but my amp reported all the same problems as the OP and this info could be useful and relevant to anyone whose search returns this thread. Jason
