The problem myself and JimBailey have reported was ONLY for the Oppo BDP-93 with it's lastest firmware. No other Oppo blu-ray player has been reported as having this very slight noise when disengaging an SACD. I've also tried the Oppo BDP-83 without a problem, so I'm going to say blame the Oppo BDP-93 on this one. I am inclined to concur given that I do not have the issue with my Oppo BDP-95. Could it be the firmware version on the BDP-93? (However, I thought I read that it was sporting the latest version).

The 105 holds nothing over the 103 unless the analog outs are used I believe. I believe at that point the signal bypasses Dirac when implemented, doesn't it?

Roadrunner, I am interested to know with your Oppo experiences why you are using the down market models 93/103 when the 95/105 have the superior performance and especially so for the Balanced outputs and Sabre9018 DAC's. Did you ever try the higher spec models? I will be pairing my XMC-1 with the Oppo 105 and also optionally one of these www.xuting.net/english/product/bd007plus.asp and may even need the XSP-1 I have to pass the extra balanced inputs optionally before or after the XMC-1. The reason I was using the "down market" models of the Oppo Universal Players for two reasons. 1. Cost 2. I was using the "digital" connector between the Oppos and the Emotiva pre/pro. Thus, with all the players in the CD performance testing using the same pre/pro's DAC to compare the output quality of each player there was no unfair advantage to any player being judged. This was the Emotiva ERC Players versus the Oppo Universal Players. They all used the same DAC (from the Emo prepro) so that I could be sure any differences I heard were attributable to that specific CD Player. This is how I was able to judge that the Emotiva ERC was better sounding than the Oppo Universal player for playing CDs. I did not own an Oppo 95/105 or I would have included it in my testing. However, reviews I have read comparing the Oppo 103 and the Oppo 105 indicated the major difference in the sound quality of the two players was due to the DAC chip being used. Thus, I bypassed the Oppo's built-in DAC and tested all the players using the prepro's DAC. Using this methodology, the ERC CD Player sounded better than the Oppo Players when playing CDs. I played about a dozen HDCD encoded CDs from REFERENCE RECORDINGS for the bulk of my testing. The reason I chose these CDs was because of their superior recording excellence and the dynamic range of their recordings.

Ah so both are just being used as a transport then...thanks for clearing that up...there are those that will have no issue going to analogue from as close to the source as possible and those that want it in the digital domain for as long as possible.
Personally I think there is no right or wrong in either of the above, and it must be down to what one hears oneself to make that call
It is nice to know that there are those out there that take the time to share their experiences with this way or that way and this gear verses that gear.
We all learn something new everyday whether we like it or not.

Worked a bit more with it today... 1) There is definitely a problem with either the OPPO BD-93 or the XMC-1 with DSD decoding. If I set up the OPPO to pass the DSD stream so that the XMC-1 can decode it, all is fine until the end of the disk. When the OPPO stops, there is a brief audio noise burst (glitch,) and the XMC-1 switches modes back to the default for the device. When I let the OPPO decode the DSD (converting it to PCM,) all is well and the XMC-1 remains in PCM mode when the OPPO stops. Seems like the OPPO may not be terminating the DSD stream gracefully? Or a handshake problem? 2) Also, when the XMC-1 is decoding the DSD stream, the zone-2 outputs output only the left channel. This would seem to be a problem with the XMC-1. The Record outputs are a good stereo mix down. Both these tests were with a CD containing a 5.1 DSD track, and the XMC-1 was in DSD Direct mode. When the OPPO converts the stream to PCM, the zone-2 outputs are fine. I get the same kind of noise on my Tivo, when the movie is over it will glitch a few times like it is trying to find a new stream to decode? Only seems to do it if I let it run all the way till it stops on it's own. IF I hit stop and go to something else it is quite like it should be. While trying different settings and sources today, it seems that anytime it came to the end of a song on the music side or the end of a movie it will glitch 2 or 3 times like the processor is looking for a source ( signal ) to lock onto. Since there is no sound coming through for a few seconds it may be flipping through the surround modes trying to match one up with the space between songs or movies. Pandora seemed to be the worse but it also had the longest gaps between songs and the CDs on the Oppo were the best. Not a big deal, most likely a software problem. It still sounds better then anything I have looked at ,

Do you get the same behavior if you explicitly select the decoding mode?

I had a minor glitch last night. I have my XMC standby in “video on” mode for a quicker start. Been that way for a week or so. Turned it on last night and the OSD was blank – just white lines and a blue box. The front panel display was fine so I fiddled with all the settings to see if I could get the OSD back. No luck. Turned the XMC off and back on with the remote – still no change – so I set the standby to “low power” and cycled the power with the remote. Presto, the OSD was back to normal.
I have a Belkin Power Conditioner ahead of all my equipment so I don't think it was a power blip. The log on my computer UPS doesn't show one either. I've gone back to the “video on” mode to see if the issue repeats. I absolutely love my XMC and I'm only mentioning this in case someone else experiences the same thing and it might be a bug. My guess though is that it's a one-off occurrence.

If so, try a manual one and see if the problem repeats itself. If it doesn't then your theory may be correct.

Only if you choose to go direct or reference, Dirac can still be used with the analog inputs. So the XMC can digitize the 7.1 analog inputs? I thought the only option was reference with that input. If it can (and given the published performance of the AD section) that would be pretty cool for some users vs just pass through.

Seems like we should just buy the 103 and save the $500 which was my original point.

I will have to defer to an owner or Emo to answer if the 7.1 inputs are available on the digital outs.

The 7.1 an along inputs are pure along. There is NO AD/DA conversion.
We spent a lot of time and money making sure this is a pristine signal path.
