The title is somewhat self-explanatory - list the albums you think would be awesome if they were remastered for surround sound at high-resolution. Mention WHY that particular album would be a good candidate. I'll start: I'd LOVE to have a copy of "Blows Against the Empire" by Jefferson Starship in HD surround. Why? The vinyl was awesome - good recording, good bass, amazing verisimilitude. The CD - not so much. Either a high bit-rate stereo SACD or a full remaster for surround would really make this album come alive again. Obviously, a great master copy exists somewhere, and the material is just made for a surround presentation. Plus, Kantner, Slick, & Kaukonen are my idea of musicians!

Any of the Pink Floyd that has not been mixed that way yet. I hear that The Wall will make it out in September! Animals would work too. Some of the Yes stuff that has bot been released that way would be good. For me, I prefer very dense rock recordings or artists that utilize a fair amount of samples or extra-musical sounds in their recordings in terms of surround sound. I listened to Marvin Gaye in surround sound the other night and it was laughable! Now I love Marvin Gaye, and What's Going On is passable in surround, but hearing Tammy sing from behind me on one of their duet's was just funny!
It would be very interesting to hear Jimmy Hendrix in surround! Sometimes, I think I do even when I am playing two channel. Probably a personal problem. 8)

My second selection is really obscure, but it has one track "The Breathtaking Blue" - Alphaville, that is absolutely MADE for surround. It is awesome in plain CD mix too, but it truly begs for surround:

but hearing Tammy sing from behind me on one of their duet's was just funny! It really depends on what you want/expect the surround speakers to reproduce. To me the surrounds are just for ambience - good for LIVE recordings. DO you want to be in the middle of the performance or you want the performers up-front? I was listening/watching one of Diana Krall's and the piano was placed at the back of the listener? Give me a break. Stereo is fine, thank you.

Good topic. One of my most enduring albums has been one that I believe has stood the test of time and pinnacled Eric Claptons career. It was well recorded for its day. The album is Disraeli Gears and it embellishes what I like to hear in a guitar and drums. In its time it was very advant garde.

The SACD's that I seem to have preference for were originally recorded in quadraphonic, so I'd like to see a number of them released in SACD format like DOSM, Santana, Moody Blues, Chicago etc have been. Maybe some Backman Turnover Overdrive, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, UFO, etc
Cheers Gary

As long as the mix will be created by Steven Wilson, the album choice doesn't really matter that much IMO.

"As long as the mix will be created by Steven Wilson, the album choice doesn't really matter that much IMO. "
Hear, hear!! Steven Wilson is a re-mixing genius! I have all of the albums he has done for others (King Crimson, Jethro Tull, etc.) and they are, each and every one, fantastic!! All of the Porcupine Tree albums that have been done in surround sound are spectacular - give a listen to "Stupid Dream", "Anesthetize", and "In Absentia" if you want to hear some incredibly good rock albums done in surround sound.
As for older stuff that I'd like to see re-done in surround sound, here is a partial list:
1) Any Jimi Hendrix 2) Nektar "A Tab In The Ocean", "Remember The Future", "The Dream Nebula" 3) Aphrodite's Child "666" 4) Iluvatar "self titled", "A Story 2 Days Wide", "Children" 5) Jethro Tull "A Passion Play", "Songs From The Wood" 6) Santana "III", "Abraxas", "Lotus", "Love, Devotion, Surrender", "Caranavserai" 7) FM "Black Noise", "Surveillance" 8) Starcastle, any of them 9) Dixie Dregs "Dregs Of The Earth", "Freefall" 10) Deep Purple "Fireball" 11) Triumvirat "Spartacus", "Illusions On A Double Dimple", "Pompeii" 12) Judas Priest "Sad Wings Of Destiny" 13) UK "self titled", "Danger Money" 14) Phil Manzanera "801", Diamond Head" 15) Joe Satriani "Surfing With The Alien", "Strange Beautiful Music" 16) Ten Years After "A Space In Time" - this would be terrific!! 17) Ronnie Montrose "Open Fire" - yeah!! 18) Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds Of Fire", "Inner Mountiing Flame"
That'll do for now. More to come as I think about it. And I'm sure Porsche Guy will have some great suggestions...

How does one know if a CD is the original or the remaster/remix of the original?

Generally, remixed/remastered are on the back label. They tend to display that so you can justify buying it again. Many of the above surround rock albums, a flat transfer from the original recording is included, esp. the Wilson mixes.

Dynaco QD-1 - This simple and inexpensive device from the 1970's will turn any source into surround sound including turntables. From what I understand the ARM (Ambient Retrieval Mode) in the CJ Met-1 and the McCormack Map-1 is patterned off of this design. I just saw one go on Ebay for 29.00.

While the Dynaco box is certainly inexpensive, keep in mind that it will not create a truly discrete surround mix from a 2 channel source. It relies upon phasing jiggery-pokery to create a surround soundfield. And, depending upon the way the original was recorded, it may sound fairly good or it may not. But it will most certainly not be of the quality found in a truly discrete multichannel mix. But hey, for $29, it might be fun to have one to play around with...

And JMilton, I have all of the albums you listed - great minds do, indeed, think alike! And based upon what I saw of your list, I'm betting that you would also like the REM catalog as well as The Talking Heads catalog that have been re-mixed in 5.1. You would also probably like Jeff Wayne's "War Of The Worlds" which features members of the Moody Blues as well as several other well known artists . It is available as a multichannel release on SACD. Linky: www.thewaroftheworlds.com/If any list members reading this are fortunate enough to be in the UK, the theatrical version of War Of The Worlds will be touring there this fall. I have a video of this and the production is terrific, definitely a "must see" event! Additionally, another album that I am sure you would enjoy is one by a "band" called called Kompendium. The album is called "Beneath The Waves" and it sounds fantastic! Here is a link: www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=7790The list of musicians contributing to the KOMPENDIUM project includes such Prog legends as Steve HACKETT (GENESIS), Francis DUNNERY (ex IT BITES), John MITCHELL (IT BITES, FROST*), Nick BARRETT (PENDRAGON), Nick BEGGS (STEVE HACKETT BAND, KAJAGOOGOO), Jakko JAKSZYK (20TH CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND), Gavin HARRISON (PORCUPINE TREE), Mel COLLINS (KING CRIMSON, CAMEL), Dave STEWART (HATFIELD AND THE NORTH, NATIONAL HEALTH, BRUFORD) and Troy DONOCKLEY (NIGHTWISH, BAD SHEPHERDS) I am also a member of an "invitation-only" site that boasts the largest collection of hi-res and surround sound music on the web. A bit of a newbie question... Hope you guys don't mind:
This thread intrigued me enough to buy my first SACD and/or Blu-Ray Pure Audio album... Looking for 'Dark Side of the Moon' and I find "Hybrid 5.1 SACD" versions. Does this differ from a "standard" SACD in terms of sound quality? My understanding of a hybrid disk is it contains both CD and SACD versions of the music...
