So... Would mating the mini x with the oppo 105 be a serious mismatch considering the oppo's SN ratio?

Actually, no. I've done it & it sounded amazing.

A very serious mismatch, kinda like a VS supermodel hanging out with 350 lb. Bubba Joe. No, seriously, the SNR differences won't be a problem. Just plug it in and enjoy!

It's funny that I'm going back to the mlores. Something about them. I'll give a review once everything is setup.

I hope to someday (probably way off in the distant future) upgrade my speakers to some sensitive floor standers like the m-lores. DC-1 --> mini-x --> mlores; I think that setup could keep me happy for quite a while. Also have been interested in Zu and Hoyt-Bedford speakers. Thanks for sharing; I look forward to your review!

Both the Oppo and the Mini-X have S/N ratios that exceed what you can appreciate. Stop sweating the specs and enjoy the music, man...

Lone man out here. I'd want something with a bit more power if it's my main system. An XPA-200 perhaps.

SCT I'm not so sure, I had a marantz nr1403 and could very clearly hear a harsh chestiness in the vocals. As soon as I switched the amp over to the crown amp it was gone.

SCT I'm not so sure, I had a marantz nr1403 and could very clearly hear a harsh chestiness in the vocals. As soon as I switched the amp over to the crown amp it was gone. I'm not completely sure what you mean by this since 1) it's not an apples to apples comparison and 2) the SNR figures between the Marantz and Crown is one spec that "doesn't matter" much in the grand scheme of things. There is a lot more going on that could explain why the Marantz sounded harsh and chesty. As sct alluded to, even the mini-X's SNR rating is so low that it would be inaudible for some folks. 95 dB SNR is very low, especially when you remember that every 10 dB doubles or halves the apparent loudness. As far as power handling goes, the mini-X is a surprisingly potent little amplifier. I know, I owned one for two years. 50 wpc into 8 ohms is more than enough for a pair of sensitive speakers, or a small to medium room with low to moderate listening levels (i.e. a bedroom system). I've had a mini-X hooked up to three sets of speakers rated from 86 dB to 89 dB (1w/1m) in a small bedroom system that got as loud as I ever wanted. Just enjoy the music and forget about specs on this one.

I got my mini gen 2 connected. The first thing that I noticed is a velvet/sweetness added to my triton 2's. I very much enjoy it. The same detail seems to be present as my crown amp, but with a slight smoothness. I'm not sure how to properly convey the difference. The ribbon tweeters defiantly benefit from the class A/B.
I know some of you may be a little confused by my next few words, but here it goes... The bass is completely different compared to the crown amp. I know the subs have their own amplifier, but this is the third amp I've tried with these guys, each one impacts the bass response. With the mini the bass seems to have more slam/ fullness with a tiny bit of overhang, again I really like it. The crown amp was a detail freak, while the mini seems to be just as detail oriented, it adds just a touch of velvet.

Your experience matches mine with the crowns. The emo amps have more robust bass into loads that are a bit more of a challenge. At least from the certain crown amps I listened to. Maybe it was just the combo though.
