Ok... In some ways I am a complete sucker for an "inexpensive" tweak. I just received a Schiit Wyrd yesterday. It's a long story , but I built a music server out of an Atom PC several months ago. I thought that I was on the right path with using the Juli@ sound card that the Bryston music players use (they use a modified version). I use the coax out to my Rega Dac. I have to say on a lot of music this combination was really good, but I would also say that for rocking out to the likes of Pearl Jam it was really lacking. So much so that I have been saving up looking for a new DAC something like the Naim DAc V1 or getting a Qute2 to use as a streamer/DAC. At one point I ordered a linear PSU for the server and that turned into a fiasco. Short story there is never received it and filed a dispute with my card company. Somewhere along the way I had also acquired a Musical Fidelity V-link but with just using a standard USB I ended up using the Juli@ card.
Several months later here I have been trying to get myself to a place where I like all my music not just some/most of it. Enter the Wyrd. I figured what the heck. It was only $100 and I was contemplating spending much more on another DAC.
I installed the Wyrd between the PC and V-Link (feeding my Rega DAC) and DAMN... I am listening to Pearl Jam VS and it sounds awesome. There is drive and real Grunge to the music.
Obviously this is not a double blind whatever and I am not switching 1 to 2, but my overall impression of thus initial album is very good. Enough that I can just enjoy some of this harder stuff again.
Should it sound different? My engineering brain says it shouldn't, but my emotional attachment to the music says it does.
