I've never encountered that screeching loud sound but what I've noticed when watching cable through my Comcast box (HDMI connection) is that intermittently, sound gets muted for a couple of seconds, as if the source was changing because once it comes back up, the receiver displays the source codec. I don't encounter this when I'm using my laptop to listen to music or watch movies (connected via HDMI as well).

Hey -- as mentioned in my review, I'm having this issue, accompanied by a little pop caused by the muting circuit, with my satellite box. It's always a result of an action like channel change or pause / rewind / forward, or when a commercial comes on in a different format. The Fusion just isn't very good at dealing with interruptions in the digital input. I've decided to live with it for now. It would be much worse if happened in the middle of material. If the OSD pop-up annoys you, set it to "No Audio Info" in Setup -> Option.

From my experience, it doesn't get triggered by pause/rewind/forward actions. It just randomly happens in the middle of the show. It's not that irritating, maybe happens 4-6 times in a couple of hours. Could be a cable box issue for me..Have you tried having your unit replaced? That popping sound looks like a QA issue. Some owners have also reported this sound issue but from what I've read, only you have that "popping" sound problem. A replacement could solve your problem.

Can I use the pre out from Fusion 8100 for front L and R speakers and use the rest of 5.1 speakers for surround sound as the same time to be 7.1 set-up. What the different between UMC-200 and Fusion 8100 about the sound? Look like Fusion is the best choice for HT with pre out + XPA 200 for 2 Front channels and use the rest for surround sound 7.1. I am not sure. Any suggestions will be appriciated.
UMC-200 + UPA 700 ($539+$359) VS Fusion 8100 + XPA 200 ($449+$339) for 7.1 HT set-up. Which is the best for you? Thanks.

Customer support gave me no indication that this is a problem with my specific unit. The fact that it's present in all the speakers, and in the UMC-200 threads I've noticed someone modding his amp cable to deal with the popping, and even XMC-1 people are complaining about muting though not pops specifically, doesn't give me hope that another unit would do any better. It seems it's just how Emotiva does muting. I'll think about it. I don't want to waste my and Emotiva's time/money with a replacement. Meanwhile, I'm learning to deal with it. Perhaps I'll be watching less TV, not necessarily a bad thing, and perhaps the next satellite box will be better behaved. For music and movies this thing sounds amazing.

Can't say which will sound better, since I've given up surround long ago (running a 3.0 setup) and I've never had an UMC-200. One thing though, the Fusion is more powerful than it seems. You might want to give it a chance by itself before adding another amp. The pre-out setup sounds like it would work just fine, and you also have triggers for the amps. Of note, no other receiver in this price range or form factor gives you pre-outs other than Marantz 160X (L/R only), which is far less powerful.

I have my Fusion 8100 up and running, powering my almost 30 year old AR's which require significant current to operate and I have to say I am really impressed with the sound. The bass foundation is very solid and the mids and highs are spacious and smooth. I thought I would need to add an XPA 200 right out of the gate but after auditioning the 8100 by itself I am pleasantly impressed. If I ever move from stereo to 5.1 - 7.1 I will either go with additional amplification or, with the pre-outs of the 8100, go with some powered, active crossover speakers. May be a while. Still a straight audio-head for now.
BTW: Still trying to figure out the PEQ. Rather difficult without having the system hooked up to video display. Gonna have to crack my wallet for a lengthy HDMI cable....

I'm using a Dish Hopper.
Btw, I just replied "yes, but I can live with it" to your poll. Since you're already aware of my review I won't elaborate further in that thread. As I said in the review, the issues are all temporary (1-2 seconds for channel switching / pause / rewind, 5-10 for input switching) and nothing as serious as a permanent sound drop.

But as I mentioned in this post: emotivalounge.proboards.com/post/693826/thread , a replacement with newer firmware has solved this and I'm a happy camper. Switches are now one second or less, much faster than most receivers. I'm updating the review here and on Amazon to reflect this. But I won't update every post in the thread

Is there any news about Fusion 2015 version ? and what is the latest firmware number of fusion 8100 ? I basically asked the same question in the "Ask Keith" section, Keith never answered. As for the firmware, it's in this thread somewhere i think, and is definitely talked about in the forum, do a search if nobody responds.

My firmware is 1.52.02.54. It seems to be recent, the initial version I got from Amazon in late October was .51.

Just got back to the board and yes, I have a Sony Blu-Ray player but the rest of my gear is more analog based: DBX 2BX Dynamic Range Expander, JVC QLY5F Turntable with various cartridges, Onkyo Integra Cassette Deck, AudioControl Equalizer and on and on. Used to sell hi-fi equipment for almost 20 years so the gear I have was fairly high end at the time ie my turntable and cartridges were roughly $2400.00 new, but I find I rarely use them anymore. The Fusion is not exactly analog friendly. Will have to pick up a decent phone preamp and probably sell off my processing gear.....

I'm pretty sure you can use the pre out for the front and keep the speaker outputs for the other channels as all channels are outputed both through the speaker out and the pre out at the same time.
Coming from a umc 1 I use the fusion to power my front speakers, 2x110w to my Kef IQ90, and a upa-500 for the rest of my speakers.
About the firmwares for what I know the current one is .54 ( my unit came with, bought it directly from emotiva a couple of months ago) but they will be surely another one, .58, I saw it with a document I asked from emotiva about the rs 232 commands of the fusion ;-)
I also think the firmwares for the umc-200 and the fusion are really close and they may share the same version number..
