I'd just like to add that there is such a thing as getting the room treatment wrong. And that includes the professionals. Carnegie Hall supposedly sounded wonderful but much less wonderful after some renovation/modernization. The ultra-modern auditorium built for the Berlin Philharmonic also supposedly sounds terrible.
I suggest going very slowly and always being in a situation where you can roll back a change. It's also way better to take it very slowly rather than spend $$$.
