First things first, thanks for reading and I hope some useful knowledge towards a buying decision can be obtained here. On popular request, I am going to touch a bit on a comparison between the Stealth 6 and the Pendragon monitors, but I will try to keep it short as my main focus here is to bring my impressions forward from the Stealth 6. (Stealth 6 will be referred to as "stealth" from here on) I have five matching stealths for a 5.2 setup.
Build quality and arrival condition: Just so everyone is clear my venting here has nothing to do with shipping damages. The stealths arrived with the usual excellent double boxing and packaging. My first order was originally for two stealths. When the first two arrived what I noticed right off the bat was one of the speakers had a thumbnail sized chip in the back part of the cabinet right where it meets with the back plate. I then noticed that right next to the chip in the cabinet was a missing screw in the back plate. I am 90% sure Emotiva sent me a b-stock speaker instead of a new one. I would hope this is the case, as it would be incredibly ridiculous to inspect, box, and ship a speaker in this condition. There is clearly audible chuffing from the missing screw hole and the back plate rattles. Upon further investigation I noticed that, in shipping, the silicone pack sits on top of the speaker with nothing between the cabinet and the silicone pack. This left what looks to be water marks the shape of the silicone pack on top of both speakers. I can't seem to get rid of the marks. They aren't always visible, but when light hits the speaker they are clear as day. This to me isn't the "biggest" deal, but I can't help but think "why ship the silicone pack on the cabinet itself?" These markings have been noted from other purchasers on the forum. Some of the screws for the front of the stealth and the rear are faded from their black color to a sort of grey/white. This is only noticeable from close viewing of the speaker.
Of course Emotiva is incredible and is sending me out a replacement screw for the back of the one stealth. They offered me a replacement speaker or $100 in emobucks, so I took the $100 emobucks and the screw to fit in the Stealth. A little black nail polish/sharpie will rectify the chip in the cabinet. I didn't expect emobucks or ask for them, but they were offered and I must say this action made me very happy. I did address the question about the markings on the top of the stealths and still haven't received an answer on a way to get the marks off, or them rectifying this by placing the silicone pack a bit more properly. They did tell me however that they would send me 5 new speakers, but given that all 5 have the markings on top I don't really see the point of putting Emotiva through the shipping charges. At the end of the day, it's not a huge deal, but when you order something "new" it should come in "new" condition. My definition of "new" would be free of markings, deffects, etc. Had I known the stealths would arrive with markings, a chip in the cabinet, and a missing screw I would have definitely ordered them b-stock and saved myself $250. I must say, that the markings don't really bother me that much. My foresight is in resale value. I am quickly learning that a speaker in absolutely excellent, near flawless condition, warrants a much better resale asking price. I have been taking extra measures lately to ensure my equipment stays in the best condition possible. Not that I plan on selling. Either way, moving on.
The cabinets of the stealth are extremely sturdy and feel to be of excellent build quality. Knock test gives a very solid feel and no hollow sounds. They have a nice quality hefty feel to them when picking them up. I am not experiencing any port chuffing as others have mentioned. Driver and tweeter seem to be excellent quality as well.
I have one other gripe that I see as substantial, that some of you may not. The available adjustments on the rear of the stealth are a WONDERFUL feature to have. However, there is no supplied tool to adjust them. If you own the stealth you know these adjustments are not easily done by hand. They require some sort of tool to adjust sensitivity, treble, slope, etc. When I asked Emotiva what they recommend to adjust them, I was told to use a plastic knife or something of that measure. lol....eh? On the sensitivity dial there is no marker or arrow letting you know which way is forward. A simple white dot on the sensitivity dial would be a very inexpensive nice touch, and would indicate exactly what sensitivity you are at.
Appearance: One of the biggest reasons for me moving to the stealths was to simplify everything. I was looking to eliminate the amp, any extra chords, wires, etc. The stealths nail it in this department. They are an incredibly easy setup, and the cable management leaves a nice and tidy feel. I connected the stealth 6 with monoprice rca/xlr cables, which are of incredible quality and an even better price. I used 15 foot cables for the LCR to keep them all the same length (Don't know if it would have made a difference to have the center cable shorter than the other two, but whatever), and 25 foot cables for the surrounds. I purchased 15 foot IEC for the LCR and 10 foot IEC for the surrounds as the supplied ones were not long enough to route through stands and make it to the strip. The LCR are on a slave power strip that trigger on and off when I power up or down the UMC-1, very nice. The surrounds I simply leave on. I will turn them off if I remember to, but if not it's not a big deal.
I LOVE the look of the stealth. They look as their name describes. The cabinet design with all the different angles gives it a very sleek look. I love the contrast of the yellow AMT on the all black. The blue LED on the front is extremely bright in low lights, so I took the recommendations here on the lounge and ordered some dimlights. I double stacked the dim lights over the blue led and they are just barely visible. With one dim light covering the led it was still a little bright for me in the dark, but two did the trick just fine. I do prefer the look of the stealth without the dim lights covering the led, but it is intrusive when watching movies. I also put the dim lights on basically every led in my house. hahaha, I went a little crazy, but the results are nice.
I have the stealths set on top of two different speaker stands from the same manufacturer. I wanted a solution for the LR where they were mounted a bit higher but able to angle down towards my listening position. The Ultimate support MS100 fit the bill perfectly. I ordered the front two stands in red. The base is red, the top plates are red, and the column is black giving the stealths this sort of "Darth Vader" look. I love it! The stands are about 39" to the top plate. This puts them about 13" higher than ideal ear level, but they have an adjustable tilting base. With the base adjusted a bit the tweeter points directly at ear level reproducing the same sonic qualities of if they were at the appropriate height. This tilting option has been a god send for when we have people over. Typically when we entertain we are all standing and moving around. Being able to flatten the tilting base puts the speakers up at a much better listening level when standing. The center channel sits on top of an auralex platform on top of my entertainment stand.
The surrounds I have mounted on the Ultimate Support MS90/45. I would have liked to match these to the front in the red version but the black were about $70 cheaper on Amazon. When reclined this puts the stealth surrounds AMT 22" above ear level. Just about perfect.
A bit more about the Ultimate Support stands. They have two openings through the columns, one that seals for sand or shot for extra supoort and the second column, which is divide, to run your cables through. They allow a very tidy system. They come with options for both carpet spikes or hard surface rubber. The rubber part simply slides over the carpet spikes should you need them. On the MS100 version the top plate rest on top of the stand allowing you to tow in or tow out without having to pick the stand up and turn it. Bonus! I highly recommend these stands. They are going to be too tall for most, but should work excellent for surround duty, or the MS100 to aim the speaker down at you. They support 75lbs. so they can hold the most behemoth of speakers.
I am extremely satisfied with the visual appearance of the stealths. Tidy cable management, small, great looks, unique look.
Performance: It took a bit of time to get my subs and stealths playing nicely. Coming from high efficient speakers, there was a bit of trimming and balancing to do. I wasn't quite satisfied with the overall sound of the stealths and subs, so I decided to listen a bit without them. Now, for the record I have what I call the "black hole room". It is large, open, high ceilings, with two gaping hallways. The stealths by themselves without any aid from the subs were simply awesome!!! There was definitely extension missing, but they weren't designed to fill a room like this. I never expected them to, but I was pleasantly shocked. The bass with the stealths is extremely quick, tight, and full. In a dedicated somewhat smaller room, I would be absolutely satisfied with the stealths on their own for music. I could hear how incredibly well they would play in a room proper for their output. I am actually very curious to explore their bigger brother, and soon to come bigger bigger brother for a dedicated 2 channel system. Finally having the stealths and subs perfectly dialed in, the sounds are really splendid. They blend great and feel as one. happy happy happy. Still, not to knock the PSA subs, I would prefer the bigger Stealth 8, or future stealth 88, by themselves for my room. In short the stealths possess a serious amount of bass from the 6" driver, that is definitely going to make owners happy in the right room.
The soundstage is incredibly wide. I would say, referring to the soundstage vertically floor to ceiling, I have heard better, but the width these speakers throw is remarkable and the best I have heard. This leads to a pretty forgiving speaker placement. Back to floor to ceiling, Don't get me wrong, the stealths play "large" just not as large as let's say the Pendragon monitors. Watching regular tv such as sports in stereo recreates the voices coming directly from the person. The stealths are an excellent choice for watching movies/tv in stereo. They do a great job at recreating live venues, but there is a slightly "small" feel to them. Keep in mind I am coming from one of the bigger sounding speakers on the market.
The AMT in my opinion is the main attraction. Voices are beautifully clear, everything sounds as it should. Some of my recordings sound a bit truer to the musician than the Pendragons did. There is great attention to detail with the stealths. I specifically am in love with the way the snare drum sounds from the them. It has fast attack and quickly comes and goes. Cymbals have a beautiful rolling ring to them. Guitar sounds like you would want it created from the studio. Horns have been a really fun listen as well. I was specifically noting how wonderfully throaty the horns were sounding on my "Dirty Dozen Brass Band" recordings. They recreate wonderful female vocals as well. Melody Gardot has been sounding very very good. In fact, I think she sounds best through the stealths.
With music I would classify the Stealths as "pleasing". They do everything very well. There is no listening fatigue. They are smooth, natural, and laid back. They get out of the way and let the music play.
There is where it gets a bit hard to write. the stealths vs. pendragons. I would say that with music they are completely different and most would prefer the Pendragons, but of course some would prefer the stealths. I for one love both. I do miss the incredible quickness of the Pendragons and all encompassing sound, but the stealths are much more laid back and relaxed. I have made this analogy before... The stealths are a very attractive late 30s woman in a swanky jazz bar drinking a nice Chardonnay, black dress, legs crossed....Sophisticated. The Pendragons are the mature for her age, uniquely cute 20 something drinking a double martini, eyes closed, smiling, moving to the music, and up for anything. Is there a right or wrong choice? Hellllll no! What are you looking for? a mature sophisticated woman, or a wild, everything is awesome with her, 20 something? Either choice, sit back, relax, and enjoy.
They only place I can say, IMPO, the Pendragons have the definite "your crazy if you dont think so" hold is with movies. There simply is no comparison with the Stealths and Pendragons. If you are going to straight HT buck up and get them. The stealths do an EXCELLENT job with movies, but there is no comparison to the high efficient, fast, all encompassing, floor to ceiling sounds you will get with the Pendragons. In the Stealths defense they aren't designed for Home Theater. Never was I dreaming they would best the Pendragons in this regard either. I prefer the Pendragons for movies and music, but my fiance Jessica does not. The Pendragons used to scare her in disney movies they were so abrupt. (hahaha, truly funny to watch your lady jump during "Toy Story") They have this ability to go from dead silent to grip the couch loud. She likes the stealth sound as it is a bit more tailored to her personality. I guess she is in to 30 something chardonnay drinking women? lucky me! OOPH! I do really miss the Pendragons, but they simply weren't practical for our situation and our situation to come. I am really happy they stayed in the Emotiva family with pdaddy
Putting the Pendragons out of the equation, the stealths are great with movies. The AMT is a nice treat for surround sound duty. I have watched the newest Transformers, Edge of Tomorrow, and Fifth element. They all sound encompassing, real, and exciting. The center channel really blows my mind how big it sounds. I was thinking initially it would sound a bit canned, but this is far from the truth. Center possesses incredibly clean vocals and presentation. Really, I am just blown away period by the performance of these speakers. I love it when you set your expectations high and they are still exceeded. I owned the older Emotiva series, and the stealths seem to be a nice improvement from them. That is a huge statement, the ERM/ERT series were freaking awesome speakers. There isn't much else to say here. At $1,750 for all 5 stealths and no amp required, you are going to have a pretty damn hard time beating this setup. I am overly satisfied with my movies, and with the stealths in general.
Conclusion: I love them! They exceeded my expectations by miles. I didn't really know what I was getting myself into with the stealths, and I was praying that they work out for a less expensive simplified system. I got everything I was hoping for and more. I am listening to Jack Johnson right now smiling ear to ear. That's what it's all about right? I have learned some incredibly awesome things about myself and this hobby through the past 4 years. There is so much out there, and swapping gear is one of my favorite parts about this hobby. However, I think there is a system you DON'T touch. You keep it simple, inexpensive, great performance, and you just enjoy it. This system ideally would perform great on all levels necessary. If you are like me and require this system to do EVERYTHING, then locate a very balanced speaker that does all things well. That's what I have found with the stealths. A very balanced great sounding system that makes me happy. They are perfect for my purpose, and I look forward to enjoying them for quite a bit of time. I would say 100% that the stealth at their current price, is arguably one of the better buys in the audio industry right now.
