I am thinking about purchasing a DC-1 dac for 2 channel but I also want to keep my subwoofer in play. Can I run my fronts through the DC-1 from the 7030 and keep my sub hooked to the 7030. My thought is to keep the DC-1 volume about 1/2 way or whatever level works best and use the volume on the 7030 as the main volume control. Will this work?

Yes, but it will be better to keep the volume of the DC-1 to full (0dB not +).

I had a DC-1 for a while and had it connected to the balanced input of the 7030 and just set the volume to 0 on the DC-1, worked great that way, call me crazy but I never found it sounded much better using the DAC of the DC-1 compared to the DAC of the 7030 , it was handy though as I could then use the USB from my Mac Mini to the DC-1 and analog in on the 7030 could be used for all the zones. Chad Thanks for that feedback. That's my dilemma. Will the DC-1 give me that much better sound than the 7030. My gut says no but my inquisitive side says to try it. I don't have any other need or use for the dac other than to improve the 2 channel SQ.
I think I shall wait!!

I think I shall wait!! At the time I also owned 2 of the XPA-1L amps and it sounded slightly better using the DC-1 connected straight to the 1L's but it was a pain disconnecting and connecting XLR cables all the time haha and even then I didn't find it outstandingly better just a tad better in my experience. Also I find the analog stage of the 7030 to be on par with my USP-1 I owned, I'm guessing the XSP-1 with a DC-1 or an XMC-1 could yield better results or like I mentioned having the DC-1 straight to the amplifier which can be a pain in the a$$. I had a DC-1 and ran it direct to my amps also. Sounded good but like you said, it was a pain to keep switching cables. My problem is, maybe it's my age and my ears , but I just can't hear a significant enough difference in most any of the changes I have made-amps, pre-pros, speakers, dacs, etc. I've had so many different pieces of gear, it's almost embarrassing. Probably like most of us!!! I'm sure if I measured the outputs and changes, there would be differences but for me in my room with my ears, there's just not any difference!!!

IMO the PT-7030 sounds every bit as good as the USP-1/XDA-1 I used for a year or more. The more I listen to the 7030 the more I like it. Now I'm just looking for a pair of ERM-6.2 speakers to round out my setup. If the HDMI switching were a bit more user friendly with the 7030 I'd call it a no-brainer to keep it over the XMC-1. In fact I have no plans (currently) to buy an XMC-1. Maybe when used prices come down lower than I can buy it with my '25% off for life' discount I'll spring for one. I'll be reading those Dirac reviews to make a final determination. The 7030 does it all for me - for now. The flexibility in setting it up is awesome.
