You guys are opening a can of worms. I've been extremely happy with my Mac Mini music server but now second guessing that a CE device might be superior. I'm overly reliant and comfortable in iTunes as a database and 80% of my library is orchestral which has to be re-tagged after import due to the lack of consistency with the DB agents.
Here were my steps to getting the sound I think is great.
Stock, entry model Mac Mini Removed platter drive Installed small SSD Installed OS X (10.9) Installed Amarra Ran scripts to disable numerous activities and services
Mac Mini is headless (no display, keyboard nor mouse) External FW 800 drive houses library USB output to DAC Control is solely done via tablet but managing the library is done via screen sharing.

The Mac Mini (and running it in a headless config) is one possible choice. Essentially, anyone capable enough to read an assembly guide and use a screwdriver can build a HTPC that will be completely inaudible at the listening position, and nowadays the heatsinks do not even need to be fanless to achieve this complete inaudibility so yes, I think some people are still imagining problems that have simply ceased to exist years ago.
