Hey all, every preamp I have owned other than the USP-1 has had separate selectors for tape source and monitor. The USP-1 has only one button for Tape. Is it possible to use the tape loop as a signal processing loop so you can switch a signal processor in and out of the system with the remote? In other words, if I'm playing a disc on a CD player connected to the CD input of the preamp, will the signal be routed through a signal processor connected to the input and output of the tape loop when I select tape from the remote or front panel of the preamp?

I am struggling with the same question but the usp-1 tape loop seems to work in a strange way. I connected the a Behringer EQ to the tape loop and it seems to be working. If for example AUX1 is the selected input the signal goes to EQ and the power amp. But if I press the tape loop button I hear nothing. It seems that every input goes through this loop but it works differently. I do not know what the tape loop button is even for.

If I remember correctly, no the the USP-1 doesn't have a Tape Monitor/Processor Loop(only a Tape input), so an outboard EQ will not work as you are wanting it to do. This is one of the major features that distinguishes the USP-1 and XSP-1 from each other.

It does have something they call tape monitor but it works like a processor loop, according to USP1 manual: "Any selected input will pass through to the Tape Monitor outputs except when the tape monitor is selected. When the Tape Monitor is not selected, the selected input is sent to the main outputs as well as the tape monitor outputs channels. When the Tape Monitor is selected, the Tape Monitor input is sent to the main output channels. " Now, I connected the tape monitor outputs to the EQ inputs, and EQ outputs to tape monitor inputs. The EQ (Behringer FBQ6200) gets a signal and I hear it working unless I select the tape button. So it looks the loop is either a processor loop or just a tape source input. Here is the picture of the usp-1 tape monitor in out:

This issue drove me bonkers trying to add a DBX unit and then tried a 3-head tape deck
It isn't a true Tape Monitor. You can't listen to the playback head while recording. I kept my USP-1 for a couple of years but sold it recently due to this issue. My vintage Yamaha C-85 has two real tape loops, so I am using that with a Jolida JD-9 for a phono preamp. I'm still a big fan of Emotiva though and love my DC-1 DAC.

I was wrong, the equalizer was not actually working when I connected to it the tape loop USP-1. It is not true tape monitor or a processor loop. I will keep my USP1 for a while but I ma seriously considering XSP-1.

Connect amp to eq then eq to pre.

Connect amp to eq then eq to pre. That would work but there would be no way to switch the EQ out of the circuit. I ended up going with the XSP-1. Glad i did because there is a noticeable improvement in sound. Not that the USP-1 is bad, far from it.

You are correct, my dbx eq has a switch to make it netural.
